buyer manipulated return label by mannual changing the desinated address
The buyer changed the address on the return label to a different address nearby, and mailed back a small envelop instead of the laptop he/she purchased. Even I have sent eBay the written confirmation from USPS stating that the package was not delivered to my address. eBay still honored the refund to the buyer. My appeal failed. Any suggestions are appreciated. Heads up for other sellers, too.

OP2 years agoSorry for the late update. Thank you all for the replies. I did file a police report. I also reported the case to USPS. I have been busy because I was hit by another scammer who returned a greeting gift saying thanks instead of returning the laptop he/she purchased as shown in the picture. At first, eBay, of course, declined my appeal just simply based on the delivery confirmation even though the delivery status indeed said that item was left in the mailbox. How come a laptop fits in a mailbox? But I am lucky that a manager in charge of eBay shipping stepped in, and helped me revert the case. Now the refunds are on the way. We should keep fighting against the scammers, and get them exposed!

·2 years agoYou can give ebay the proof of the return packages' weight confirmed by your post office, not being anywhere the weight of the package you sent the buyer. Also file a case with your police and contact police where the scammer lives. They wont work with you but will often work with your police. Also get usps mail fraud police involved. Tell ebay all of this and that they could be considered enabling mail fraud and theft from you.

·2 years agoI have heard this said before. How in the heck can they change the label? Whenever I have had to use a return label, ebay generates the label and the addresses, there's no option for me to alter anything. Even trying to alter the readable address doesn't change the scanned barcode info.

·2 years agoYes ... and all the automated systems will route the package to the post office and route corresponding to that address. Then humans will look at the printed label, and they decide what to do about the discrepancy.

·2 years agoThis is a known scam and there are several postings on this forum of similar incidents. You are in a fairly small town see if you can obtain the envelope the buyer sent back from the person it was sent to. You have the persons name and address open a case with the USPS OIG this is mail fraud and a federal offense. File a police report with the buyers local police department. If they buyer has a history of doing this they may take some action.
If you have the shipping receipt from when you mailed the item it should have the weight of the item on the shipping receipt as USPS scans and weighs items that are dropped at the post office and presented to a postal clerk.
The fact that this is a laptop does not surprise me they are one of the high target items for scammers along with cell phones and other electronics. Not something I would ever list on eBay.
