Buyer asking for return when no returns are accepted before item delivered to buyer
Best option to deal with this?
I don't offer returns and buyer is asking for one saying they "changed their mind" before the item has been delivered to the buyer.
I can decline, I'm just concerned they will file some type of scam claim when the item is delivered and end up getting a return or refund regardless. I'm not interested in losing my product and money.

OP8 months agoSo I accepted the return and asked the buyer if they wanted to proceed seeing the total 2 way shipping costs exceed the value of the item and I'm waiting to hear the response.

·8 months agoAdvise the buyer to click the return this item and select that they changed their mind. That will make if official and prevent some problems. Wally mart shoppers.

·8 months agoThis is what I'd do....let the buyer know, no problem you can return it. Tell them to file the return claim and give the reason they don't want it, like they said. Let them know when you get it back they will receive a full refund for the product. You provide the label, but eBay will deduct the label cost from the refund as it was a remorse refund, and you provide the full product cost refund less the original shipping cost.
You are only out your time, and have the item back to resell for $60. At this point there is nothing to claim with their bank as they returned the item for a refund

·8 months agoHi @mr.xpowerseller
If you still have the item ... you would be foolish to ship it after the buyer requests a return. They surely will find a way to get their money back somehow ... and you likely will be out both the item AND the money.
I think I would cancel the transaction, choosing 'Buyer requested cancellation'. It doesn't make sense to 'accept' a return when you haven't shipped the item ... and there is no safe way to decline the return without risking losing item plus money.
I'm very sorry this happened.

OP8 months agoItem was paid for and shipped. It's currently in-transit. I can't cancel it now. Return shipping will exceed the cost of the item but not my problem.

If it were me, I never would have sold something for $40 with $40 shipping as you have probably already surmised. Risky business.
Since you are in this spot, you can roll the dice by declining the return and hope it does not end up in a charge back case with the buyer's bank.
Or roll the dice on accepting the return and see if the buyer ships it back. That is sometimes out of a buyer's wheelhouse to actually get the large item to the carrier and then you ~might can still end up with a charge back to fight or not to fight.
Cost $20 to fight it with much less than a stellar chance to win.

·8 months agoNo returns does not mean no returns in eBay usually.
This will be a bad sale I am afraid.
Is the shipping expensive?...May not want it back.
'changed their mind'...even though buyer mentioned it...buyer can do an 'item not as described' instead when clicking on the reason for the return.
'Changed their mind' buyer would normally pay for return shipping...but will they actually click on that something else?

·8 months agoNot offering returns can place the seller in a difficult spot because there is a risk of escalation through eBay or the payment provider.
The most advantageous way to handle this situation may be to accept the return and have the buyer pay the return shipping.
Although a refund will need to be sent when the item is returned, this will allow you to get the item back to possibly sell it again.

·8 months agoFirst thing: 'why are you asking for a return on an item that has not even DELIVERED to you yet; as well as this item sold with no returns as clearly shown on the listing before you purchased'
2nd: is buyer just 'asking' on a message or did they open an official 'return'?
Regarding being 'scammed' or them opening a return and shipping a rock etc. there is NOTHING you can do about that.
mr.xpowerseller
OP8 months agoThey opened an official return, no messages from them.
If I decline I'm afraid they will then open a (scam) not a described claim after they receive the delivery just to force ebay to accept the return. That's what I want to avoid.

To ^^^ this, I'll offer that the buyer can't open more than one Return request on eBay. If it goes to their CC, eBay is outtie.

Since you're a new seller, you might not know how a remorse Return works. The buyer will have to pay to ship it back to you and you can reduce the refund by the out-of-pocket cost of your shipping to them in the first place. Food for thought...

·8 months agoAccept the return, then see what the buyer does.
You can deny the return, then buyer can go to their payment source and you'll probably be out the money and item.

OP8 months agoAny risk if I accept they still do the chargeback and never actually return the item? The item is big and heavy, the return shipping will exceed the purchase price of the product

@mr.xpowerseller
As explained upthread, the buyer pays for return shipping if you accept the remorse Return.
mr.xpowerseller
OP8 months agoI understand that, I don't think the buyer does. They will most likely never return the item once they see the cost.

Ah... that would be a good thing, no? But even if they do, you'd have an item to reprice and relist. I'm with Ken... approve it. 🙂

·8 months ago'Changed their mind' is a remorse reason and a No Returns seller can decline those. I'd not consider it a "scam claim", but the buyer might still contest the charge with his/her credit card. It's your policy and your call. Good luck.
Afterthought... a CC chargeback would set you up to lose your product and your money. 😑
