Tech issue - Hover to zoom feature not working.
I see from the Tech Support forum, this is not a new issue. I've cleared cache, rebooted, changed password 2X and am using the most recent version of Edge. Can someone respond please on the status of this issue? There is no point in contacting an assistant - he/she will tell me to do the above. As a buyer, this feature is critical.
Thanks for any help/insight!

·3 years agoHover-to-zoom just began working for me as I was browsing. It definitely was not working at the start, then began just now.
So hopefully I was wrong, and this is in fact a bug that they're fixing (or have fixed) rather than a feature change.
Listings still show "click to enlarge" rather than "hover to zoom" however.
Thanks to you, mysterious ebay tech out there who is working on it. Hover to zoom is an absolute necessity for many of us.

·3 years agoThat's valuable feedback. Helps us to make it better. I will bring this up to see how can we make zooming better! Please keep sending us critical feedback that helps us a lot.

I like the currently updated functionality 😀 The Hover to zoom label displays when the listing page first opens. Then when I hover to zoom the Click to enlarge label displays.

Everything is working like a charm! Thanks so much for sorting this out and to everyone who weighed in on the issue!

Thank you, I am trying. I have confirmed that the issue IS NOT RESOLVED with the dev team here:

OP3 years agoI just logged in to ebay. Hit one of the listings on my watch list. Hover to zoom worked, but there was no text saying hover to zoom, just "click to enlarge. Then I went to check this message board and when I went back to my listings, no hover to zoom on the one listing I checked nor any other. So maybe they are testing....
Anyone who thinks AI/computing is the answer to all our problems doesn't rely on hover to zoom! 😉

I just checked an item on my watchlist, as well as several of my listings, and the hover to zoom is working. There is no text saying hover to zoom, only click to enlarge, but the image is zooming when hovering over it.

Seems to be working for me also. I checked several watchlist items as well as some random ones from a saved search. It's still not functioning as before, but it's working. I love progress!

Wonderful! I am tagging below one of the dev team members that has been working on this issue for us.
@tustil72
Some in this thread are reporting seeing the hover to zoom feature enabled now, however, the text on the image is only displaying "click to enlarge" and no "hover to zoom" text. Will the text "hover to zoom" return to the images?
tustil72
·3 years ago@mcdougle4248 "Hover to Zoom" shows only the first time the image is loaded. (Try changing images or reloading the page)
When user hovers over it switches back to "Click to Enlarge" as thats the next action user can take. Looks like we feel here that "Hover To Zoom" should be shown always.
What would you like it as? I'll bring this up with the product team as another fix.
anglophile62
OP3 years agoI'd like to see Hover to Zoom always. TBH, I rarely use Click to enlarge to identify detail. I use it to see larger images, but hover to zoom enables us to see real detail on an image. It's pretty critical for me!
Thank you so much for working on fixing this issue!

I am not seeing a "Hover to zoom" label at all. When the page first opens the image displays the "Click to enlarge" label. When I change to a different image, the "Click to enlarge" label is all that I see. Reloading the page does not change the label at all, it remains as "Click to enlarge".
To me, it would make sense to have the "Hover to zoom" label display first, then have to "Click enlarge label" appear after the user has hovered over the image. If that is not possible I would rather see the "Hover to zoom" label at all times.
Screenshots of the view I have now. As you can see even changing the image does not have the "Hover to zoom" label:
ETA: The zoom feature is working, I just did not capture it in my screenshots.

·3 years agoApparently there is currently an issue with zoom on touchscreen devices, at least.

Have you reported the issue to customer service? It is possible the issue is affecting more sellers than just those using touch-enabled devices.
sw44magnumman
·3 years agoI haven't been able to find a way to report it to customer service. All I could find was a page showing "select problem" and the zoom feature or anything close to it was not selection.

Try going to this eBay Help Page:
https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/technical-issues/technical-issues?id=4220
Once on the page, scroll to the bottom to view the contact options that are currently available. If requesting a call-back is an option, I would try that one first. Otherwise, you can select Chat, and when the chat box opens type in AGENT and that should get you into a chat with a real human being and not an automated bot.

By any chance are you using a touch-enabled device? I am experiencing the issue and am using a touch-enabled device (Dell All In One/Windows 10). There is an issue with zoom on touch devices, they are working on fixing it now.
A member of the dev team from eBay responded in this thread (scroll to the last few posts):

·3 years agoHello and thank you for your reply. Yes, my laptop is touch enabled. Its funny because I called eBay customer service last night and they assured me that it wasn't an eBay problem. Thanks again and sorry that I missed the answer the first time! -- Brad

Hello, Brad and you are welcome.
Unfortunately, eBay customer service is not always aware of every technical issue affecting the site. Hopefully, the hover-to-zoom feature issue will be resolved soon.

·3 years agoI'm using a desktop PC. There are no touch devices attached, and all touch-related options are turned off in settings (I found that most of the touch features when you have no touch devices interfere with some software I rely).
The hover-to-zoom feature was working for me around 10 days ago, I'm 100% certain.
However I've noticed that listings now no longer show "hover to zoom" but instead say "click to enlarge" which implies to me this is a feature change, not a bug, and that ebay is unlikely to change it back.
But hey, I felt I've been spending a bit much on ebay auctions lately, so this will help me avoid buying things as much.

There are a couple of other members that have also reported they are not using a touch-enabled device. I will attempt to tag the eBay dev team member that was looking into this for us and let him know.
I hope they will get this resolved soon for all of us.

OP3 years agoI hope it's not a feature change although I could probably take a break from buying as well! 🤣😉 This is a valuable tool - surely product development would never remove a well-used and necessary feature!

OP3 years agoWhy I certainly am! Dell XPS 13 Windows 10. But it appears from the thread you posted it is not just touch screen users. Glad you connected with an ebay developer and this is an active fix.

·3 years agoHover over Zoom abruptly quit working for me. It works on my other PC, but quit working on my laptop. I use Firefox and have Windows 10. It worked one day and then about an hour later, it didn't work anymore. I can only "click to enlarge."

·3 years agoHover to zoom is not working for me either. It looks very much like this is in error so hopefully it's fixed soon.
I mainly use eBay for buying collectible miniatures, and not being able to zoom in is extremely inconvenient. Have had to walk away from several purchases because I couldn't see the details and condition.
This is on Windows 10, both Firefox & Chrome, latest browser versions.

·3 years agoHover to zoom is not working for me anymore either. I mostly buy vintage watches and I can't see any details about them anymore. I'm not going to buy anything I can't see. Ebay must have done something. I don't think all the sellers would have disabled this feature all at once on the same day. This needs to be corrected but I can't find anyway to contact an ebay representative about this.

OP3 years agoHi All and thanks for posting replies!
I just reported this via Ebay chat. It is a known issue that is currently being worked. I was asked to provide any comments that would help escalate it. I said this is a critical function for buyers who need to view detail on any item and that some users may not purchase items unless they can see the detail provided in a hover to zoom view. This situation, in turn, may affect sellers....by losing potential sales.
Hopefully, this will be escalated and resolved soon. Should anyone else have this issue, reporting it to ebay help will assist in escalating...
Have an amazing day!

·3 years agoThank you for reporting it to ebay. I tried to find a way to report it but I kept getting a page wanting me to select which problem I was having and "zoom" wasn't on the selection list. Hopefully they get it working again soon. People aren't going to buy used items they can't see well.
anglophile62
OP3 years agoI had to get on to Help chat and speak with a human assistant. Ebay's listing of help topics is woefully slim. You have to hunt for a bit to find any way to get information on tech issues let alone report them. I have a feeling there is a reason for that....

·3 years agoIf you want to use eBay and have all of its bells and whistles work correctly, one must have windows ten or higher. XP windows 7 does not work anymore and has not for a while
anglophile62
OP3 years agoI've done all of the above. It's still an issue. I'll try accessing ebay in Mozilla and see how that goes. This is happening with listings that I've had in my watchlist and hover to zoom worked just fine before. If a tech support person can weigh in, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks to everyone who has responded! I appreciate you taking the time to test the problem!

·3 years agoHover/zoom seems to be working for me, though I have seen other similar complaints recently, including at least one on ebay.co.uk. Possibly something has changed, causing issues for some users but not others. Possibly the changes have not reached me yet, or eBay may be testing something new in certain accounts only.
If you are experiencing this issue, it might be worth restarting your browser or device; sometimes a pending update install can cause issues with various features. Or it may be worth trying another browser entirely in case one works better than another. Browser add-ons may cause conflicts in some cases, so temporarily disabling add-ons might be worth a try.

·3 years agoHover/zoom only works if the seller has included a large enough image -- it must be at least 800 pixels wide or high or there is no zoom.
Seems to be working for me in Edge at the moment.
