Selling a Sports Trading Card with bidding like normal auction, but as a "CHASER". Scam? Gambling?

Bid and won a football trading card recently. A photo of the card was shown as 100% of any other card on site. Won or bought a bunch of cards in the sub $14 range, and wanted one which I bid up to $45 with shipping. No idea of value. A few weeks later, I got 3 totally unrelated cards... no name players... Contact the seller, and the last word in the description said "Chaser." What this means is that you're bigging up an "AUCTION" for the "chance." of getting this card in a random bunch of cards. "Chaser" is a slang term. This is like going to a charity event and buying a raffle ticket for an expensive car. I think these types of cards should have a watermark over the photo聽 of the card in the header. Anyone else agree? IF, the seller even has the expensive card, he could literally have the same "auction" 100's of times, making $5000 on an $800 card. This is a Ponzi for sure? Or did a newbie, just learn the hard way???聽

路2 months agoThose "CHASER" listings are just awful. You'll see these accounts that post them respond to negative feedback by saying, "it was a chaser auction, don't cry because you didn't get the card you wanted". I mean, come on - there is basically no possible way to ensure the integrity of the "CHASE" card ever getting sent to anyone, it's just completely shady and should be grounds for a ban/suspension.
The only thing in the card market that grinds my gears on that level are the listings for Topps Bunt cards... That should be illegal, too.

路2 months agoWorked at a radio station for years and In the United States, any promotion containing Prize, Chance, and Consideration is classified as a lottery. Because private lotteries are generally illegal, businesses must eliminate at least one of these three elements to legally run a promotion or giveaway.
Prize - those valuable cards
Chance - Receiving the cards relies on randomness
Consideration - you paid
It is an illegal lottery.

路2 months agoI BELIEVE THAT IF THEY ARE SELLING THESE 馃挬 CARDS FOR SAY $30, BUT THEY HAVE NO INTENTION OF GIVING YOU THAT $300 BIG PRIZE THAT EVERYONE'S CHASING.馃が
WELL THEN THE OVERALL VALUE OF ALL THE ITEMS YOU RECEIVE SHOULD EITHER EQUAL WHAT YOU 1ST PAID OR MAYBE SURPASS IT. SO $30 OR MORE.
AT LEAST YOU GOT YOUR MONEY'S WORTH. IDGAF IF IT'S 30 $1 CARDS....

路6 months agoI just entered the word "chaser" on the category "Collectibles/Sports Mem, Cards & Fan Shop" -- and over 11,000 individual listings popped up!

Quite the racket, it looks like -- maybe some of the "blues" should be notified that the word "chaser" is double-talk for "mystery pack."

eBay doesn't allow this. This is covered by eBay's policy on Chance Listings. You're right, this is like a raffle, and that is not allowed by eBay.

Here's what you need to do about this, and you have to do it within 3 days after receiving the card because trading cards have a very short time frame to file a dispute.

Don't try to call eBay. Waste of time, won't help anything in the slightest.

You need to open a return case on the transaction, and use the reason "Does not match the description or photographs". eBay will accept your word about this. You don't need to argue about it. You may need to provide a picture, just take a picture of what the seller sent you and use that. You will probably need to send the cards back, and when the seller receives them, then the seller will refund your money or eBay will do it for them and charge it to the seller.

It doesn't matter that the seller put "Chaser" in the description. That doesn't mean anything. It's meaningless.

If you say the item you received was not as described, that's all you need to do. As long as you do it within the 3 days that are allowed for trading cards.

OP6 months agoThanks for your help,聽 l actually did that, but first contacted the "seller" ,for a voluntary refund... He scoffed at me and said no. That's when I contacted eBay directly..then the guy offers me a 50% refund! Seriously! I declined..lol g story聽 short, l went back to customer service chat, they granted聽 me a full 100% return..l had to send back the worthless cards,聽 this dude, needs to go into politics! Lol Cheers

路6 months agoI'd call into eBay and ask them about it. There are certain rules around those 'Chance Listings'. If you go the help pages, you can read them but it's really going to depend on what exactly the seller put in their listing description and how it was worded.
