Returned to Sender
I just got an item back saying:
Return to sender
Insufficient address
Unable to forward
Return to sender
From the usps. I purchased the label through eBay. Now I have the item in my hand, and I am going to lose money and/or have to refund the person for not getting it. How does a refund get done. I have been dealing with this for a week now. Help me out here.

·Sep 12, 2026 at 12:46 AMYou are protected by Seller Protection @warburtonmusic as long as you shipped to the address the buyer gave you on the Order in Ebay. You always want to ship to that address, if you were to alter it, then you would lose ALL Seller Protections.
In the case where you ship to the address on the order, Ebay will NOT force you to refund the buyer, nor would the buyer win an INR if filed. As long as all of this is proven by the tracking, you are just fine.
I always recommend contacting the buyer and giving them a couple options.
You can refund the buyer for the product by not the shipping or the non refundable fees you have associated with that. Then if the buyer still wants the item, you can relist the item, the buyer needs to repurchase it and make sure they correct their ship to address or this problem will occur again.
Or you can invoice the buyer through something like PayPal for the re-shipment of the product and associated fees from the site for using their services. Once you receive the payment you can reship. But if the buyer chooses this option, when you go to purchase the shipping label, DO NOT do it in Ebay, purchase the shipping label through PayPal or any other site EXCEPT Ebay of your choice. You do NOT want to buy it in Ebay because it may over-ride the existing tracking information and destroy your record of how this original shipment went.
If the buyer never responds to you in a reasonable amount of time, maybe a week. Then I would recommend sending them another message outlining that you are sending them a refund for the product, but not the original shipping and associated fees. You have every right to break even on this transaction. Then refund the buyer.
Some will recommend to just keep the money and the product, even if the buyer were to contact you because Ebay will NOT force you to refund the buyer. I see this differently that some. Sellers experience from time to time what is called a Chargeback, when the buyer bypasses Ebay and files a claim for a transaction directly with their Credit Card Company. That will almost always end with the CCC ruling for the buyer and allowing the buyer to keep the product and get a full refund. Now all sellers think this is wrong when a buyer does this. I see this situation you are in very much like this. I don't feel the seller has any right to keep the product and the buyers money too. But just my opinion on that.

·1 month agoYou need to determine if the buyer had the incorrect information entered into ebay. Contact the buyer and get clarification of that.
If they entered the wrong information it is not your fault nor ebay's. (note I had one a few months ago where the buyer had their ebay address as 123 1st plaza rather than 123 1st street. PO returned as insufficient address). So it doesn't take much to get into your situation.
Once you clarify your situation, you can refund the buyer (less the shipping) through the transaction.
