funds held hostage
Wasted 25 minutes on the phone and just get told "that is our policy."
Back ground. I have been selling for just over a year. I have sold the same item over and over. As in selling multiple of the same thing. Never once had a single issue with holds on my account. They are sold anywhere from 1200-1400 dollars. So they are all high price items. i sold one on the 30th of September and arranged local pick up. Not the first time i have done so. The previous time I did this, funds were released the next day for an item that was $1300. The item from the 30th was $1250. I noticed that they are holding the funds for 30 days. I thought it was odd so i called them to hear what was going on. The first answer i got was "it is due to the cost of the item." I quickly remined them that ive sold the same item for more money multiple times. "well we cant use previous orders as an example."
it was a losing battle. tried to speak to a supervisor and was put on hold multiple times until i was told there was not available.
My main frustration is that i have 100 percent positive feedback, and they are treating me as if i have issues with my items and or customers.
just want everyone to know that just because it is YOUR money, it actually isnt until they say it is.

·10 months agoI believe some form of delivery hold will eventually roll out to everyone.
eBay started this years ago with those it saw as being a possible risk. The range of perceived "risks" has accelerated growing rapidly. It will soon be you're a seller so you're a risk.

·11 months agoIf your a new seller or any seller that has not sold for a period of time, eBay does impose a hold. It's often for 30 days but can be longer. High risk items can also trigger a hold at any time. Those are the rules of selling here. Too many scammers were selling and skipping out and never shipping the items or sent fakes. The hold tends to scare them off. So it's good for the buyers too but a pain for legit sellers.

·11 months agoNormal and standard procedure, it's called risk and fraud mitigation, it protects the buyer, the seller and the intermediary.

·11 months agoReally? What "Normal and standard procedure"? I have Merchant accounts outside of Ebay, and there were no "Holds" placed on funds ever from the sale or products and customers using a V/MC payment method just like people do here when buying on Ebay. Even when the account was first initiated. Its a hold the funds and collect interest off our money thing. Nothing different. Quit being an "Ebay Defender" and realize these holds are not industry standard and we are being taken advantage of with poor business practices. Oh, and there were none of the on the fly, totally random "Funds are on hold to Verify your bank account information" with standard CC merchant Accounts. These are all made up scams perpetrated by Ebay.

·11 months ago@gun_yard You don’t have a merchant payment processor account here on eBay. You’re not comparing similar things. Compare it to other online marketplaces and you’ll find it’s the same.
gun_yard
·11 months agoYes, that is abundantly clear. However, both sales outlets process credit and debit cards exactly the same way. If there was an issue with a transaction, standard chargeback protections are already in place. Ebay already knows this, and yet they do this hold scam, bank verification scam, and you stand right up and say it is acceptable. Quit being and "Ebay Defender"

Stating the realistic facts of selling on Ebay is not being an 'Ebay Defender'. You can argue till the cows come home about your funds being held, but its the same for all new sellers, sense of entitlement or not.And with all your complaining, you continue to list here.

eBay is not scamming you. They are protecting themselves and their buyers.
You can believe what you want, but I like to think most people would rather know the truth than be mad about something they wrongly believe.

·10 months agoIt's not just Ebay, other market places also hold funds and do bank verification's.

·11 months agoP.S. Its no longer possible for newbie sellers to grab their money and run, which is a good thing. With Ebay's 30 day MBG, Ebay prefers that any refunds come out of your pocket, not theirs.

·11 months agonobody is defending ebay, once you have been around a while and really take a REALLY HARD look at how things work, then you will understand what I have already said above.
I can only suggest doing some real research otherwise, those of us with years/decades of experience generally know what we are talking about, maybe not 100% correct every time but you can rest assured the information is generally spot on.
Yes ebay has there own set of rules and you as a seller on ebay are on a leash, the leash get's a little longer over time 100% depending on your performance level.
So unless there is some other information you have not shared or are unaware of, then what you have been told already is the reason.

·10 months agoThese holds are absolutely becoming industry standard.
If you sell on Poshmark, the buyer has three days to accept a purchase or ask for a return. If buyer does nothing, the hold is release after the 3rd day.
Same thing on Mercari.
Even if you had your own merchant account, many of them require new clients to keep a rolling balance to cover refunds.
This isn’t being an ebay defender, this is 25 years of experience in e commerce, in my day job AND on eBay.

·10 months agoI also sell on both Poshmark and Mercari also. As most know, biggest reason why for this 3rd day payout is that after that 3rd day, that's it, deal is done. Over with. That sale is behind you. That money is yours. Buyers have no recourse. No recourse with the Seller, no recourse with Poshmark or Mercari. They try to dispute anything with their CC after that 3 days. permanent removal from the platform.
EBay's 30 day MBG even on used diapers is why Sellers have this problem with the 30 day holds. Ebay is still the only platform online allowing 30 day returns for USED crap, garage sale, flea market junk. EBay doesn't distinguish any difference between a NEW iphone in the box being sold for $900 and a crusty, stained old baby bib that wasn't even washed before it sold on ebay for $3, BOTH are covered by the 30 day MBG. Hell, even Best Buy out there has a 2 week return policy for almost all NEW Computer Related Products. Buy a Laptop brand NEW in the box, it starts giving you problems 15 days later, you're screwed. Best Buy will tell you tough shat. Buy a beat up old no memory left Laptop on ebay, you can return it 29 days later.
That's the main reason ebay has 30 day holds on Sellers funds. Ebay knows the garbage a lot of their Sellers are selling on their site. Ebay's not going to take the hit for a lot of this crap their Sellers are selling, so they're going to hold that money to cover their ridiculous policy they came up with to compete with Amazon. Come BUY from us, EBAY, we got your back for 30 days no matter what you buy, no matter what we're selling. That in itself draws in Buyers alone.

·11 months agoYes, that is policy on Payments on hold | eBay. If you are a new or infrequent seller eBay will hold funds to ensure the transaction goes smoothly without returns or chargebacks.
