Funds being held by Ebay for no reason
I have been selling on Ebay for many years & have an excellent record with Ebay. Completed very recent sales with no problems. Now, after last sale, I get notice that my funds are being held until confirmation of shipping. Ebay has always taken 3 days to put funds in my bank account, but is now holding even longer?
I've always waited until I got paid before shipping because this is what Ebay recommends. I have written in my listings that I ship within 3 business days so I can be sure the funds are in my bank account before shipping & I can be certain seller is not cancelling.
After lengthy chat with Ebay manager & repeatedly being told "it's Ebay's algorithm", he never gave me a legitimate reason for funds being held. Is Ebay holding funds to earn interest on our money? They've been paid, why can't I get paid? Do I notify buyer that Ebay won't pay me so I have to cancel the sale? Why is Ebay choosing to punish Sellers with excellent sales records? I used to recommend Ebay to friends & help them get started selling. I will no longer be doing this. Does anyone have recommendations for online selling websites so I can leave Ebay?

·3 years agoThis is happening to me right now!!! I have gone above and beyond just to have a 100% rating and my buyer had me deliver the item to her home and we completed the QR code and she wrote a wonderful review. I get a message saying eBay will release funds after confirming no issues with buyer. Two days later and no money in my account I called and said well you can read her review and that’s your proof that sale went fine and she was happy with purchase. I then get told “we have to hold them to confirm there are no issuesâ€???! And my reply….uhm you already did and I have a message stating that funds should be released July 10th? After literally playing chicken on the phone with silence I asked “ok fine tell me what you need to release funds…..it’s obvious you need something and I need to k ow what it is so I can get paid. I would NEVER have sold the chairs I had so cheap if I knew I wouldn’t get the money for 30 days!??! I could have made a lot more with time but that was the point….I needed a quick sale because my electric bill is at the cutoff point and I should be able to use my money to pay it. I called a supervisor almost hysterical begging for him to do something. My kids are 5 and 8 and it’s literally hot enough to endanger their lives and I can’t have no electricity in this heat. We have no where else to go and this is their home….I .Literally. Begged. And guess what? Nadda…..no I’m so sorry yes we can get those released….no alternate recourse to obtain my payment….nothing just this algorithm bullcrap. I kept saying that the system informs me every single time that they only have to make sure buyer has product and they’ve done that so this feels like theft. They told me it’s because I’m new but they can’t explain why my $20 and $40 sales get released as soon as item is delivered. Oh so it’s a coincidence that the one over $150 is being held? I’m sure. So I finally reached out to buyer and asked her if there were any messages ect from them and she was irate that they hadn’t paid me yet: She said she would cancel because she wouldn’t have bought if she k ew the person who owned the chairs couldn’t get their money and now can’t pay utility bills. I don’t see another alternative!? And honestly EBay is the only one who loses in that situation because after they refund it they don’t get to keep almost 25 percent of my sale for some outrageous fee. I even told a representative that it’s sad this is my only option because at the end of the day I have to do what’s best for my kids. And eBay can punish me for it all they like but seriously do they honestly think I should do something else? I’ve asked, begged and pleaded and I’m sick to my stomach over their blatant disregard for my families well being. They have the power to release my funds and still won’t do it…..they could get whatever info they need and they just refuse. I don’t think I can use their platform. No kidding I’ve sold over $600 worth of items and have seen $40!! They have all these hidden fees and don’t fall for their shipping lie. If you have them calculate or use their label they charge the buyer like $3 to $4 on a $5 shipping label and call it some kind of fee that I swear has to be illegal. They are literally robbing me blind. Is there another platform everyone else is going to? I heard Etsy and Mercari are about to take over and was hoping to get advice. Id love to stay at eBay but I’m a single mom and there’s just no way I can wait a mo th before I get my funds. I just can’t…..I keep going back to me crying and begging on the phone while they just seemed aggravated that I was even bothering them. I know customer service has lacked in the past few years but I could never be that heartless. If you are new you better realize you will be broke broke broke for at least two months before you could ever make a dime. I should have made a good amount of money and it seems they only charge a $1 for listings but that’s not the actual truth. I sold chairs for $150 that were pickup so no shipping and I swear to god somehow my portion is $105.00. They took $45 of my sale and you better believe they released their portion….so why not mine? How can you release MY money to yourself and not give me a dime???? Warnings to new sellers: if you need funds quickly Do Not use this platform. It’s not possible. And ai get the small delay…or delay until buyer receives but the other? There’s no rhyme or reason and they will not bat an eye if you can’t pay your utility bills: it’s nothing to them so again find somewhere with immediate or 48 hour payout. eBay has potential to be great but I can’t understand how anyone could be treated so poorly.

·3 years agoLate but yeah: this is a huge downgrade from how it used to be done, with direct payment into Paypal & none of this p!mp/Big Brother **bleep**. Now you have to wait for them to "verify" your bank account & also wait while they "hold" your funds and "verify" that your order was received. It wasn't broke so eBay done went ahead & fixed it. How thoughtful. 😑
Oh, and now hobby/side hustle sellers will be taxed at the $600 threshold instead of $20,000 thanks to the Great American Rescue Plan (read: the Not-So-Great Corporate Bailout 99.0) . Like Twitter, Netflix, Youtube, Reddit, Digg & so many other platforms before it, eBay has jumped the shark & thrown its loyal users to the sharks, a process Cory Doctorow has coined "ensh!ttification".

·3 years agoI sold a piece of electrical equipment last week ,it sold for 3500, after eBay’s cut I get a hair over 3000, the buyer arranged his own shipping and paid eBay, the trucking company picked it up, I contacted eBay and they said they can hold my money up to 10 days even though the buyer has taken possession, I have his bill of lading as well as pick up confirmation, I checked with eBay several times, I still have no funds, they now will not call me back live and the last rep said they are going to hold my funds another month, I have in the past month sold two identical priced items and have had no issues with getting paid, I have been an ebayer for 22 years with no complaints from sellers or buyers, I feel as though eBay is simply working with my money, I’m very tempted to contact the US trade commission about this, they are promoting their site as a great place to sell, but they hide the dark side of their policies, I feel like my money has been stolen and I have no recourse.
I will not be shipping anything in the future until my money is in my account, it’s too risky trusting eBay

·3 years agoYour not alone I sold 1 item on ebay december 15th shows delivery yet Ebay holding my funds till January 30th, already filed a BBB report but was told to also file with the FTC and Justice department as they are investigating EBAY for this situation. By law the have no right to hold funds since they say its a contract between the seller and a buyer, Ebay has no rights to keep holds on anything.

·3 years agoThats funny, considering the feedback you got for one of those ring sets..with no previous selling history of course those funds will be held. Ebay prefers that any refunds come out of your pocket, not theirs. Oh and be sure to have that lawyer read over the UA you ageed to when you signed on to sell here. Its iron clad.

You have been paid by the buyer when eBay shows "awaiting shipping". That payment is confirmed. It just needs time to process, and be released to you.
You just don't have the funds in your account yet. As others posted, standard procedure for infrequent sellers, so there is indeed a reason for the payment delay. Those delays will end as you sell more items.
You need to ship within your stated handling time. Cancelling sales, or not shipping within your stated handling time because the funds are not yet in your checking account will result in defects/dings on your account. Defects can lead to higher selling fees, or suspension.

OP3 years agoI've been selling on Ebay for years, have an "Above Standard" rating & never took a break from selling. I'm not an "infrequent seller". I haven't been listing a lot of items recently because I have been busy elsewhere. My sales never stopped. I had sold several items, with no problems, before Ebay put this restriction on my payments. I even shipped early to Buyers during the Holidays even though I state in my listings that I have a 3 business day shipping policy (because Ebay takes that long to transfer money to my verified bank account.) I would ship sooner if Ebay would give me my funds quicker. I never cancel orders nor ship late. I check my Ebay account daily for any issues. There have never been any until now. I thought Ebay was set up for Sellers to sell however many items they wished. I now have to sell a set number of items, within a set amount of time, or Ebay will hold my fees? This is something Amazon does to get rid of Sellers who sell on a limited basis.
Ebay has been paid, not me. There is no money in my bank account, so I have not been paid. The Buyer thinks they've paid me, but they have only paid Ebay. Ebay has received their fees (including fees I'm charged for taxes & shipping costs that I never see & that go to IRS & shipping company). What happens if Buyer cancels purchase while I'm waiting long time to get paid? Ebay is Buyer focused & told me that they had to be in order to keep Buyers coming to their website. Just because Ebay has been paid, does not mean I will be. I've lost trust in Ebay because everything I've been told about why I can't get my funds makes no sense to me. I'm not guilty of any wrong dong & feel like Ebay is punishing me & won't tell me why. I spoke with 2 Ebay employees & can't get an answer except it's "Ebay's algorithm & there's nothing that can be done."

You can pay for shipping labels using the held funds, you do not need money in your bank.
Looking at your solds, you have sold 2 items in the last 90 days.
You have not received any seller feedback, before these 2 recent sales, for more than a year. That doesn’t jibe with your statement of ‘never taking a break from selling.
Buyers can’t cancel on a whim. Buyers can request a cancellation, but until the seller agrees with that request, the transaction continues.
Buyers can file an item not received case when the item doesn’t arrive by the estimated delivery date.
You will never be paid if you you don’t ship.

OP3 years agoThe info you're seeing about my sale record is incorrect. I've never stopped selling. I have to keep sales going. It's how I pay my bills. I talked to Ebay about this being inaccurate, but they couldn't come up with a reason why it shows this way. Also, buyers only leave feedback about half the time. When I first started selling with Ebay, I requested feedback from buyers through email requests. One buyer was enraged that I would ask for feedback & told me to never contact them again or they would report me. So I never ask buyers for feedback any more. It's up to them.
At the very least, Ebay could have told me they were going to start holding my funds so I could have addressed this mess earlier. It really caught me off guard & was very unexpected. Also, for them to tell me after several conversations that there's nothing they can do shows were Ebay is today -- not caring about sellers.

·3 years agoI just wanted to say the same exact thing is now happening to me. I've recently begun to experience the same holds and have received the same vague answers from ebay about algorithms and that they can't divulge what the algorithms look for due to circumventing reasons. I have 100% feedback with 0 issues, ship on time and most times sooner than needed and my sales are consistent. Ebay puts a hold on my money and says its because of a reason their algorithm found and that it isn't making any mistakes but then refuse to tell us what the reason was. Today I excepted an offer and before I did on the screen to accept or decline ut stated if I accepted I would be paid in 4 days. I accepted and then my money for that sale went on a 2 week hold....**bleep**? Ebay has done something shady and by refusing to inform us of the exact reasons of these holds just goes to confirm this. I will be moving my more higher ticket items to Mecari and Etsy and hope to phase out Ebay altogether. Hopefully more and more will do the same.
