eBay showing dispute still open when its not. Frustrated is an understatement
Ive been on eBay for over 25 years and have never had so much Frustration.
Where do I begin....
In October I purchased running boards for my truck. About 5 days later, my son told me he had a fraudulent charge from ebay for $248. I told him to contact his CC and open a dispute, which he did. He got a new CC and the charge was being disputed. A few days later I said to myself, odd, that amount equals to what I purchased. Make a long story short, the charge was in fact legit. He put is CC info into my ebay account without telling me so it defaulted to his CC. He called the CC company and made them aware that it was in fact legit. So they recharged us the total amount as expected.
Heres where things turn bad. I received the running boards and went to the mechanic to install them. His quote was for $600. I said no way that I can afford that. So I decide to return them. I contacted the seller, they said no problem at all. They sent me the shipping label via the ebay messaging app. I printed them and sent them on their way. 5 days later seller confirms he received them BUT he cannot issue a refund because there is still a dispute open with ebay.
I called ebay, they tell me to call CC company to close the dispute (its already closed), CC company tells me to call ebay, I call ebay and they tell me to call CC company and this repeats over and over.....
After numerous calls with CC company, the CONFIRMED the dispute is closed with ebay as of 10/30/25 and they even sent me a letter to my house saying thank you for letting us know the charge was legit, the dispute is now CLOSED as of 10/30.
I call ebay back within the last few weeks, they tell me its not closed. Spoke to 3 supervisors and they told me that it can take 6-8 weeks for the dispute to close on their side which is really odd. So here we are today in the 8th week about to pass and nothing, dispute still open. I call eBay today and spoke to another supervisor, said there is nothing that she can do she said.
Can someone COMPETENT from eBay help me!!? Any guidance?? DONT TELL ME TO CALL THE CC COMPANY, NOTHING THEY CAN DO.
Few things to note:
1. eBay doesnt care that I got the letter from the CC company telling me its closed. Cant use it as proof.
2. There is no way for eBay to simply 3 way call with me and the CC to confirm its closed.
3. Seller is very responsive and tried over and over, they cant issue a refund with dispute open.
4. I asked the seller, please just paypal me the total amount, they would rather not as they are a big time seller and want to do things the right way. Even send a check, Zelle, anything, they wont. They keep saying once the dispute is closed, they will issue refund.
5. Return window actually closed already. At this point, I may ask the seller to just ship them back to me and Ill just resell them on eBay to get something back.
6. Some of you may say that the seller should not have sent me shipping labels before I can open a return case, I TOTALLY agree. Though didnt think this would happen like this.
IM AT A LOSS HERE. Frustrated and its the holidays and I can really use the funds!
Please if anyone can help here.....

·6 months agoThere's a simple explanation @a-plus-deals but you don't have a resolution.
You made a purchase with credit card transaction ABCD. Ordinarily you would pay for transaction ABCD when it appears on your monthly statement, or eBay would refund transaction ABCD after you complete a return.
But transaction ABCD was disputed and credited. When you discovered it was legit, it was rebilled as transaction WXYZ.
It's the same for every retailer: They can only refund the original transaction ABCD. They cannot change the ID and refund another ID e.g. transaction WXYZ instead. Or issue a refund check, which eBay cannot do.
The seller no longer has your payment, eBay has your payment
-- but is rejected each time eBay tries to refund transaction ABCD to your card
-- because transaction ABCD has already been refunded and cannot take another refund.

·6 months agoI think the seller is full of beans. A seller can refund anyone at any time whether a case is opened or not.

·6 months agocc disputes can take 90 days and I suspect it just has to play out
the seller was probably happy to just get there product back considering they were out the funds (at the time)
It may (should) play out that the money gets refunded in the long run, as the seller cannot both keep the money and the product.

OP6 months agoI hope it just works out like that. I find it odd that if you open a dispute, eBay is notified instantly. However, when a dispute is closed, it just lingers forever......

At the point the credit card company was contacted, eBay was blocked as an option for any resolution.
Im not sure you have any options left here.
