eBay sent payout to an unverified account
I’ve been using my eBay account for over 20 years. I haven’t used it for a while, so this time it made me enter my bank details for payouts. I have no idea why but figured I have no choice so I play along.
I awaited the micro deposits for verification, but never received them in my bank account. So I never verified the account. I was simply waiting for the verification to fail so I could try again.
Next thing I know, I get a notice that eBay sent a payout … to the unverified account! Isn’t that the entire point of verification?!?! I tried chatting with customer service, but they said “my†money is no longer with eBay and it’s my fault so I’ll need to contact the bank to figure out what happened.
So if eBay sends their own money (not mine) to a random bank/account, why are they putting me to work to figure out their mistake? Why should I be put in the middle? Why would a bank listen to me about a transaction I was not involved with? Why would they send money to an unverified account?

·3 years agoThis is just to try and be helpful. I never intend to sound passive aggressive.
When I navigate to: Payments > All Activities > Transaction details for a payout...
I see under Transaction Info, type 'Payout', the following info that may help.
Payout ID, Sent to "My Bank Name, ending in 1234"
Under the 'Funds Status' section, I see "To track your payout, you can contact your bank and use bank reference ID XYZ123456789."
So lets confirm some things.
a) Does the payout bank name match your expected bank name? If not, I'd talk to eBay with the PayoutID
b) Does the payout bank acct last four digits match the correct savings/checking acct expected? If not, Id talk to your bank giving them the Reference ID and the last four digits.
c) If items A and B match expected, then call your bank giving them the "reference ID" shown, and ask for a trace to be performed. They know how to service these requests, but it may take some time.
This is just what I would do if I was in your shoes. Your mileage may vary, or I may misunderstand your details, but either way I am just trying to help.
Best wishes.

OP3 years ago@chris13 Thanks so much for your response. It is indeed helpful, thoughtful (and not passive-aggressive!)
Your proposed approach is logical, and likely the most *practical* way to get my money. Unfortunately, it involves me doing the work myself instead of ebay fixing the problem. All of this trouble could have been avoided if they simply didn't send the payout to an unverified account.
So while your solution is probably the best and most practical, I personally, am more concerned about eBay's irresponsible behavior here by sending money to unverified accounts - then blaming me and trying to get me to do the work to fix their problem.
My expectations are simple:
(a) that eBay sends the money to my new verified account (without further action by me) and
(b) eBay acknowledges their error sending money to unvalidated accounts and promises to fix it
I guess we will see if they care enough to respond here. Thank you again for your practical solution.

·3 years ago@mspb It is a frequent misperception that eBay monitors or responds to this forum which consists almost entirely of volunteer users - and we get plenty of abuse even when trying to help for free. The forums are full of angry folks, users who feel entitled or victimized, others who havent learned the basics, and lots of jaded helpers who specialize in passive aggressive responses - even to each other.
That said, the 'blues' as they are often called, generally only respond to a specific callout by name such as you and I are doing in this thread with tags. Even then, their inboxes must be something frightful. You can hunt down one of their names from other threads and see if you can get their attention, but I caution setting expectations for the satisfaction we all often feel is justified or deserved. Many recommend directly PM'ing support on Facebook, which I dont use so cant suggest specifics.
Affecting change can be a deeply dissatisfying pursuit 999/1000 times... though I wish you only the best with your efforts. Let me know if I can be of any more help.

OP3 years ago@chris13 I'm not familiar with the workings of this community forum, so thanks for filling me in.
I am not sad or angry, but I do feel an obligation to point out absurd behavior and policies when I see them. So many people just listen to these big companies and do what they say because they assume they are right. I'd much rather see a problem fixed then cave and do whatever ridiculous thing they tell me. That way maybe it'll be better for the next person.

·3 years agoSo, what did you find out when you looked at the suggestions from @chris13
If you need some help, we are here to try and assist....
what does it say when you "Click Details" from Last Payout?

·3 years agoYou will die waiting for ebay to respond and admit that they made an error. It's not going to happen. Ebay does not read these forums. (They should but they don't. ) The folks that monitor here will not admit an error either. Why don't you contact Ebay on Facebook and explain the situation. Perhaps they can help you. You will have to do some legwork to get your money. Eventually, if the money is in the wrong account , it will go back to ebay and then ebay will have to send it to your state government as "unclaimed funds." and then it will take a lot of work for you to get your money back. Goodluck. Let us know if the problem is resolved.

OP3 years ago@toybrats you made me laugh out loud... I almost ended my last post with "I'll die on this hill!". I hope you're not right about them admitting any error.
How can a modern financial company can have automated systems in place that allow it to transfer to money an unverified account?
It's truly an astounding level of incompetence and financial irresponsibility. How poorly they handle it after it happens just compounds the problem.
You're definitely right about one thing - I'll die on this hill 😜. Or maybe I'll save someone else some trouble.

·3 years agoI do have a 2 questions....
How did you get a payout before the standard "hold" period for infrequent sellers? The timeline indicates you got your "payout" really quick.....are you sure it was the "payout" that you are looking at in your transaction report?
What @chris13 asked would shed some light on this to help you out.....
Did you look at these variables to confirm it was a payout and not just available?

·3 years agoIf you have'nt received the micro deposits, check to be sure the routing numbers and account numbers are accurate.
If it was time to send the payout then eBay will send it per the payout schedule you set up. If the account is current you have nothing to worry about.
eBay can't call your bank to verify a deposit , it's not their account, only the account holder can do that. Call your bank to see if the payout is there.

OP3 years ago@ebooksdiva , as I mentioned, I did not receive the micro deposits, I did not receive the payout. It is not in my account.
I have no authority to call a random bank about a random account about a transaction I was not involved with.

·3 years agoThe bank that receives the payout would be the bank account that you have on file. It won't go anywhere else but what you put as your bank. eBay can't call your bank and ask about your account. There's privacy policies to protect the customers of the bank.
You need to check in your eBay account to be sure that you put the correct routing number and account numbers for your bank account to receive your payouts, ebay can only send funds to the account that you put as your bank.
If the routing numbers and/ or account numbers are wrong you need to correct that and call the bank to let them know a deposit went into a wrong account. eBay can't do any of that for you.
They don't send payment out to just any bank, they go by the information you give them to use.
Good luck

OP3 years agoI have since replaced the payout account with a new account and properly verified the account with micro deposits. This does not fix the previous payout mistake by eBay.
I called my bank about my account. The money is not there. I never asked eBay to call about MY bank account. Yet you (and eBay) seem to keep blaming me and asking me to call another bank about someone else’s account.
> They don't send payment out to just any bank
…yet that’s exactly what they did
@ebooksdiva @I do appreciate you taking the time to respond, but you have not answered any of the questions I asked. I’ll repeat them here:
If eBay sends their own money (not mine) to a random bank/account, why are they putting me to work to figure out their mistake? Why should I be put in the middle? Why would a bank listen to me about a transaction I was not involved with? Why would they send money to an unverified account?
It’s OK if you don’t have answers. Hopefully someone from eBay can answer. I wonder why they bother verifying bank accounts at all if they are going to send money without doing it.

·3 years agoI wanted to add but time ran out:
Payouts take 1-3 business days or more to show in your bank account depending on how your bank handles deposits.
