Ebay charging tax for Oregon-illegal per Ebay tax policies
Just agreed to an "Make an offer" purchase from CA seller shipping product to buyer (me) in Oregon. Upon going to checkout, Ebay automatically added Tax to the total price. Seller did not add the tax, Ebay did. Per Ebay's written tax policies, Oregon is not a tax jurisdiction therefore, it's illegal for Ebay to charge tax for a State they have no means of remitting the collected tax, just more ways to pad their pockets. Upon contacting Ebay, spoke with three different reps who knew nothing about their tax policies. Last rep said she emailed corporate back east to have the tax charge removed from my purchase but could take 7-9 days. This is wrong, illegal and buyers in non-taxing states should not have to go through this ordeal for every purchase. Ebay needs to correct their system to recognize non taxing shipping addresses, if they are going to continue being the tax collector for sellers.

·3 years agoFirst, eBay has 100% control of tax collection in all states except Missouri, and has since approximately the time of managed payments implementation (late 2021 to early 2022.) There are no longer any user settings for states (only US territories and Missouri) in Seller hub.
Second, I have been on chat with customer service multiple times to try to get corrections to my account. It has been escalated to the "tax team" and other departments, and no correction has ever occurred.
Third, discussion with the initial customer service agent is a waste of time. They are in India, don't relate to US sales tax law being different in various states, and are required to read from a script. In the end, they aren't allowed to be helpful, so an escalation ticket is created, the ticket number is provided and the chat is ended with a "you should hear something within 48 hours." No response is ever received.
Fourth, I have kept the transcripts received in eBay messages as proof of eBay's refusal to correct the errors. (And if any tax authority comes after me, I can prove it's eBay's fault)
Fifth, the overall vibe is: you're too dumb to understand tax law, we'll take care of this for you, don't worry about it.
If anyone having this same issue finds a solution, please message my company through one of the products on my store page. (note, this appears to only effect sellers that had custom settings PRIOR to eBay taking control of sales tax. Any settings from that time are locked in. Mine are outdated and in some cases incorrect. The tax rates collected for Oregon and other sales tax free states today (2023), are exactly the percentages that I had incorrect before being locked out of the settings (2021).
