30 day hold arbitrary and excessive after item delivered
Summary: gettincreaky expresses frustration over eBay's policy of applying 30-plus-day holds on funds, arguing it targets smaller sellers despite their long-standing history and high approval ratings. They mention shifting sales to alternative platforms due to dissatisfaction with eBay's handling and customer service. roccotacodad54 compares the situation to the norm in self-employment, suggesting financial preparedness mitigates stress, while gettincreaky disagrees, emphasizing immediate payment practices in retail. tobaccocardyahoo adds that eBay's holds serve to protect itself, highlighting the need for internal analysis to understand specific triggers in payment delays.
eBay claims to be focusing on buyer protection by letting their bots apply random 30 plus day holds. That is a load of bunk as I have been selling thousands of items for hundreds of thousands of dollars over 29 years. This recent policy must be slammed by sellers.
eBay uses the excuse now, that high value items, unusual selling habits or a drop off or sudden increase in sales sets of the “bot” and applies a 30 day after delivery hold. This is a hole load of BS as I have been selling for 20 years and it’s always “the buyers” experience. I too got slapped with a 30 day hold and have thousands in my held sales. EBay gets to keep the money and play the float and use excuses despite my 99% approval rating and up to $100k a year in sales, that translates to eBay making at least $15k in commissions off me alone. Now they questioned why my sales have dropped off to an annual amount closer to $30k and it seems they are either willfully stupid trying to send their sellers away. Why would anyone sell in a platform that holds your delivered item funds for 30-90 days. Their Philippines call center agents are useless quoting the script and always saying “we understand” which is just an insult. I suspect they focus more on their large sellers and don’t care about sellers at my level or yours and the only way they’ll smarten up and release the funds quickly is if sellers like me bolt and they have to explain that to their stock analysts. Until then I’ve transferred most of my sales to Marketplace (which is a pain but you get cash with no fees and don’t have to deal with shipping and eBay acting like a collection agency for the companies who often just steal more money from your shipment account s), Vinted, Depop, Cherish and others. Perhaps if enough sellers leave or gather together and give eBay the middle finger, they might not hide behind the AI / Bot excuse for holding funds at excessive levels.
Anyone else have any ideas?

·2 weeks agoEbay's holds are not buyer protection, they are Ebay protection.
Should you fail to have funds to refund a buyer with a problem, Ebay would have to pay.
Your sales history does not justify the fast payment for the volume of revenue you are generating.
You and Ebay are the only ones who have sufficient information to suggest what there is about your record which might be the cause.

I was self employed for much of my working life. 30 to 90 days was the norm and I had to pay for materials, wages etc. etc. in the meantime.
Selling on eBay seems to me to be a form of self-employment. Working capital avoids stress and worry over the 30 to 90 day wait. If the bank account is fat, no worries.....................

OP2 weeks agoThis isn’t a manufacturing business. Not quite sure how your waiting 30-90 days to get paid gave you comfort when 20 years ago sellers were paid immediately and now they try to play the float. Sounds like you work for eBay. At retail you are paid immediately now eBay makes you wait, takes their fee, extracts additional fees from shippers who randomly squeeze sellers for more fees.

·2 weeks agoI work for nobody. My point is/was that if one has working capital in the bank then 30, 90 or 120 days doesn't matter as long as the funds eventually get released.
