Local pickup selected by out of state buyer
I used ebay's suggested opening bid for some audio equipment (99 cents) and shipping charge ($40), now the *out of state* buyer who bought my item with that initial bid (99 cents) is trying to bypass the shipping charge by selecting local pickup (I didn't realize I'd even given that option). They say they'll have a local friend pick it up. That dollar won't even cover the gas I'd have to use to meet them somewhere... Is there a rule about the buyer needing to actually be local to select local pickup?

OP2 years agoYes - they already paid 99 cents and selected local pick up. I guess I'll just take the loss on this one and use it as a learning opportunity: be sure to turn off local pickup and/or select a higher minimum bid than what ebay suggests.

Where is the buyer located (Order Details)
Make sure the person picking up has the QR Code required for the pickup....
This confirms delivery of the item...
oh...always start your auction for the lowest amount you can accept for the item....
its fun to start at .99, but....well, I think you see now
and...get in there and edit your current listings that show LOCAL PICKUP

OP2 years agoWell, suddenly, after arranging a pickup place and time, they/their "friend" lives three hours away and wants me to ship it, after all. I just need to give them my bank account number or PayPal so they can reimburse me 🤔

Do NOT give them your bank account number -- do you want them to drain everything in your account?!?
Since your buyer chose "local pick-up," then "local pick-up" it is.
And you can notify your buyer that, since his "friend" can't make the pick-up, the buyer can either arrange some other form of "local pick-up" -- or the buyer can choose to cancel the order.
If the buyer chooses to cancel the order, you can always re-list it -- but NOT for local pick-up -- and NOT for a starting bid of 99 cents.

OP2 years agoDon't worry, I wasn't even considering giving them that info. I ended up just refunding their 99 cents, stating "buyer can't pick up item." If I relist it, I'll make sure not to have local pick up as an option without raising the minimum bid.

PLEASE make a note: THERE IS NEVER EVER ANY REASON ON EBAY TO GIVE THAT INFORMATION TO ANY BUYER. Why in the world would that even come to mind?

There's no fee's on the shipping amount.

As long as they can get it picked up, doesn't matter where they live.
