I was sending order confirmation texts to buyers. I didn’t know this was bad?
So let me give context, I am younger. And in my generation (15-25yo), it is common to receive confirmation texts. So since people put their phone number in their shipping info, I naturally would send them a confirmation text. However I had someone freak out on me and say he was going to report me. My original message was this: “Good afternoon, I am messaging you about your recent EBay order for the ———. The —- have been sent to you via mail. Thank you and take care ðŸ‘â€
should I contact eBay about this?

·2 years agoI send a message via eBay for every item once it is in the carriers hands. I know how today people are checking tracking every 5 minutes and USPS can sometimes be a little slow at updating, so just like to let people know it's officially on it's way and not just 'label printed'.
I also add a note if I used packing peanuts! I hate those things, but they are really good at what they do so will use them sometimes and just think it's the decent thing to do to warn them.
Finally, sometimes I throw in an extra item that goes with whatever I sold (like an extra speed loader, scope rings) and want to make sure they find it and don't throw it out with all the peanuts!

·2 years agoI guess I missed this whole evolution of how we communicate on ebay these days. I have never received a text from an ebay seller, I have gotten ebay messages.
I'm not about to start privately texting everyone myself, but, okay.

It probably never occurred to you that your buyer might have a land line. Although, somebody buying Call Of Duty is unlikely to.

·2 years agoThey can’t report you for the text messages, but they can file for an item not received and get their money back since you won’t have delivery confirmation for those digital items.
You can also be reported for copyright infringement since you do not own those video game in game items.
Lastly, you refer to your generation as 15 to 25, are you yourself over 18?

·2 years agoA phone text is more intrusive and "personal" than necessary. They already know it's shipped. No need to reach out further, even if it's well-meant. It's not a generational thing.

·2 years ago@annadryl Sure it is ... before Cell phones, email, etc folks put little thank you notes in packages ... bet the OP might not think to do that ... a text is easier because their generation communicates that way more than most other gens ... IMHO

·2 years agoI'm with you, our generation was schooled on all the proper responses, thank you notes, bread and butter notes, and full on letter writing... I sent a wedding gift to my God daughter in 2022, and she thanked me profusely... in a text message. That's just the way it is these days.

Don't sweat the small stuff, just stop texting customers. The reporting threats are idle at best and most likely if reported the person receiving the complaint probably communicates the same way you do.
List - Sell - Pack - Label - Ship ... wait for Feedback or a return request ...
Every generation communicates differently ... when I started traveling around the US & Canada on business back in the '80s the phone system of the day was made up of pay phones. If you wanted or needed to make a call you had to find a payphone and use your calling card. ... in the 90s I finally got a cell phone but it was what they called a "Bag phone" ... you plugged the power cord into the cigarette lighter and stuck an antenna on the roof of your vehicle ... the upside was they were 3 AMP phones ... powerful ...
In this day and age spam calls, texts, emails, letters in the mail, etc are commonplace and yes, some people freak out if they think they are being targeted ...
My generation (end of the Baby Boomers) knows more how yours communicates than vice versa ...

·2 years agoNo reason to contact eBay. Your actions did not violate any policy so the buyer's report will go nowhere.
That said, eBay sends out plenty of confirmations when orders are placed, shipped, arriving early, delivered, etc. Skip the texts going forward - they'll freak some people out that are overly concerned about scammers and/or may not realize sellers have access to their phone numbers.
I'd also suggest keeping comms on eBay. It's very common for scammer buyers to come along and ask you to text or email them outside eBay so they can set you up to steal your product, and sometimes your money.

·2 years agoeBay takes care of the notification. Many buyers freak out when an eBay seller uses their phone number. So despite your good intentions, you can stop sending those. But don't worry about repercussions from the ones you've already sent, since you didn't really do anything wrong.

·2 years agoThey get notified when it's shipped through the app or site. Though I'm sure your intentions were noble I wouldn't bother doing that. You risk upsetting some people.

It's just unnecessary and evidently disturbs some of your buyer.
