I think I got scammed selling an item
I need help please! I was listing an item for 3k and someone offered 4k to buy it. They purchased it but then asked me to refund it. It said I can refund and re list for free. I did that now my account is negative!! Please help me it used my PayPal funds

Those funds will be held for 30 days.
You'll have to cover the refund until the hold is released.
If you didn't provide a funding source for refunds, they'll pull the funds from your checking account.

·6 months agoYup, the seller is responsible for funding a "refund". You should have cancelled per buyer's request, or in this case, bad address could work. You will be out the money until the initial payment clears. Not sure if this account you are posting on is your selling account, but more than likely that money coming back to you will be on hold for a period of time.
Again, I don't know your selling status, but these things are best learned on $20 sale items, not $4k items
I should also mention, if you did print out the shipping label, then your only choice would be to refund, cancelling is no longer an option at that point

OP6 months agoOkay let me be clear. But also eBay rep said I should be fine. I listed a sport card for auction min bid 3k I’m getting so many messages for 4-5k if they can buy now. One guy offered a buy now if 4k I accepted. He imemdwtly asked me to cancel and refund because of wrong address. I clicked the option that said refund and realist for free. But now my available funds are -3500 4k + eBay fee I guess I hope that gets refunded too to me. My fear is that this all happened within 5 mins so they used my money from another sport card sale that’s pending should release next week. To cover this fraudster. He gets my real money and his bank doesn’t clear never giving me his 4k idk how it works

·6 months agoThis was an auction listing, with starting bid of $3,000, and best-offer available. https://www.ebay.com/itm/188060364427? It is not unusual for offers to be made that are above the starting bid price on an auction. The new listing already has 4 bids in less than 4 hours, so it is a desirable card.
@mlcardvault, You may have cancelled and refunded the purchase before the payment had cleared, so it may not have fully processed yet. You need to wait a few days for the processing to be completed. This should sort itself out.
My understanding is that refunds are always made first from the sellers funds that are available for payout, and then from the seller's backup payment source if more is needed. Sellers need to have enough capital available to cover possible refunds for a brief time.

If not, where did you ship it? Where did you get the buyer’s address?

Are you auctioning another one? Is it the same card or did you have more than one? Did you create a new listing for that ‘buyer’ and let the auction continue?
There is a lot going on. I truly hope I’m misunderstanding all this.

OP6 months agoThe item never shipped. I listed the card 3k min auction. He offered me 4k I accepted . He paid an eBay said payment received or what ever. He then asked me to refund and sent a refund request . I accepted because it said refund and relist for free. My fear is eBay used my real money sent it to him. He is not going to use real money and it won’t process and I’ll never see. It and he gets 4k and I’m -4k

I think you'll be fine.
As a brand new seller, your funds aren't immediately available and for expensive items, the hold will likely be close to 30 days.
But when the funds from the first sale are released, they'll go back to your bank account.

·6 months agoI don't understand why anyone would offer $1,000 over asking price? Sounds like you are being setup for some kind of scam.
You should have "cancelled this transaction" that way EBAY would "reverse transaction" and your customer would get refunded.
When you choose "send refund" (you need funds available) and if your fund are "still pending" (money will be taken from your PayPal account).
I still feel customer may be a scammer. What they could do after you "refunded $4,000" they could immediately contact their credit card company and "reverse $4,000 payment made to you". This way they could get $4,000 free money from you and they would pay you "zero dollars".
I suggest you request EBAY callback to verify that $4,000 customer paid is still in your "pending funds". I hope everything turns out good for you.

OP6 months agoHello, so my fear. Is that yes I don’t as suppose to do cancel because buyer asked but he asked for a refund and ai did that. It took money from my payments on hold or what ever which is my - value. He paid 4k on an item I had listed on An auction for 3K min. He has not responded since . What I think is going to happen is that eBay sent him money (my funds). His payment for my item will not process and now I get nothing and he has 4k and I am -4k

·6 months agoWhat does not make sense is why customer would offer to pay $1,000 more than asking price of $3,000. Did customer actually pay you the $4,000 they offered?
Problem could be caused because you "issued refund" instead of "cancelling the transaction". When you "cancel transaction" using reason "buyer wants to cancel" EBAY immediately "reverses the transaction" and the customer gets their money back.
When you "issue refund" Seller needs to have "funds available" to issue refund (that is why your PayPal was charged). Even though customer paid you $4,000 those funds are "still pending" and not available to you yet. At least, that is my understanding of how things work.
I suspect you were being "set up" for some type of scam because nobody offers to pay $1,000 over asking price. What I think could happen is after customer gets "$4,000 refund from you" they immediately contact their "credit card company" and reverse their $4,000 payment made to you. This way, they get $4,000 from you and they paid zero dollars to you.
The whole thing sounds fishy. I suggest you request EBAY callback and make sure $4,000 is still in your "pending funds".

·6 months agoI would have waited until the funds went from Processing to Available before I refunded. It could be a scam but I am not sure. Assuming it is not a scam and the payment does clear then you will get the funds. eBay authorized the payment and eBay authorized the refund so you should be ok if it was a scam. You did all this thru eBay, yes?
