checking into fraud
I am wondering if anyone else recieved a message like mine when looking for a vehicle and then the person asked to be paid by gift cards? The person seemed legit, as did the address and vehicle. I am very skeptical of the payment method. Anyone else experience this? I am not sure how ebay motors works, but this doesn't seem right?

You guys need to get out more.... you can buy good cars and trucks on facebook and craigslist all day for a few hundred dollars worth of Jack in the Box gift cards.....

·2 years agoIf you found ads like this, you weren't shopping on eBay's site, although you may have been told the sale would go through eBay.
Did you happen to stop and wonder why eBay would be using other sites, like CL and FB, to list and sell when eBay has their own site for that purpose?

·2 years agoWould agree with you except for this fact: Most of the folks who are tempted by this are those of us who can least afford to lose several thousand dollars to a scammer. If our advice can stop just one of these purchases, then we are on our way to stars in our crowns.

Let me guess -- you initially found this ad on Facebook Marketplace, or Craigslist, or the underside of a dead wombat -- anyplace EXCEPT eBay, and this "seller" told you that it was being sold through eBay.
Sure thing.
And every time I shop at Walmart, a Walmart employee tells me to buy what I want at Target -- because that makes so much sense.
Oh -- and don't use a credit card (on which purchases can be disputed).
Nope -- instead, use gift cards (which can't be traced).
And the "seller" even offers "free shipping" -- but shipping across the country will probably cost more than what the "seller" is asking for the car itself.
And the "seller" could probably sell that vehicle locally for much more than they're asking on the internet.
Hint: There ain't no car. Never was. Never will be.
It's a scam older than the pyramids: "Hey, Pharaoh -- you wanna buy a used chariot? I just read about one on the Rosetta Stone. The seller is being deployed to Abyssinia, and is offering it cheap -- but wants payment in tana leaves. . .."

·2 years agoA lot of people have received those emails/messages and it's been a scam every time and some have lost thousands of dollars falling for it.

·2 years agoLet me guess, the "seller" is claiming that the vehicle is currently being held in storage by eBay and that eBay will be the one delivering it to you. The reality is eBay neither stores or delivers items for sellers.
Report the ad to the website you found it on and cease all communication with this con artist immediately.

·2 years agoAny seller that wants to be paid in gift cards is a fraudster. ANY seller!! Scam artists love them because once you have given them the codes they can immediately redeem them. They also have the benefit of being completely untraceable.
Ebay won't help you on such a scam as ebay has absolutely nothing to do with the transaction.
Also, that price is way too good to be true for a 2007 F150. That alone should have been a big red flag.
