Aftermarket "Upgrade" - More Money Tossed in the Breeze
I read a post on another blog this week where an individual who has an older Chevrolet pickup wants to "upgrade" to front calipers with "dual pistons". The OEM is a single piston like the one I am showing.
Of course, this individual believes that using a dual piston caliper will somehow increase his braking power.
Despite trying to explain that displacing brake fluid is what causes the caliper to compress and whether it is a single piston, dual piston or 20 piston, there is only so much force with the brake pedal and so much surface area for the brake material to be applied.
We suggested larger rotors for more surface area as an upgrade but it seems that this person is convinced that dual pistons are the way to go.
The era of Chevrolet pickup under consideration has an excellent factory braking system (1973 to 1987).
I never cease to be amazed at how George, Barney and Elmer will waste HUNDREDS of dollars on things that will result in no change and then stand at WalMart and compare two cans of corn and opt for the one that is 5 cents cheaper.
