Victorian Era? Stamped Metal brooch
Never seen an old brooch like this, appears to be made of a stamped desing metal, old C clasp, and writing under where the pin attaches, some kind of hallmark, and looks like the initial J H. Any help at all with age, company, construction, etc appreciated.

OP3 years agoI agree. Art Nouveau has elements of nature, leaves, plants, stalks, tendrils, etc. This is more Victorian flourishes.

·3 years agoArt Nouveau as a produced style runs about 1890-1920. The tube hinges were out of use in the UK by about 1900 and in most other places by 1910-ish. (the Scandinavians still used them on traditional jewelry for a lot longer.) I'd "pin" this at 1890-something. It does have marks by the hinge, but bedarned if I can read them. One letter looks like an I but that's as far as I get.

OP3 years agoThanks, we can't make out the hallmark, it is just squiggles, but the letters, I'm pretty sure, are JH.

·3 years agoTo me, the styling is closer to art Nouveau than Victorian. But I am certainly not expert so wait for the real experts to chime in.
