Bakelite Brooch - what is this?
My first and IMO best guess is a pennant flag waving in the wind. It also kind of looks like a curving/twisting animal horn. (Also- a wall mounted seal trophy and a pointing finger-- and probably a lot of other things- but I doubt these.) Google is not helping. Anyone know or have an opinion? TIA

·1 year agoMy guess would be an Italian "Cornicello Pepper" pin used to ward off evil spirits or the 'Evil Eye'
Usually worn around the neck on a chain.

I`ve always wondered what that shape was supposed to be! Now I know! 😊

·1 year agoIt looked like a pennant to me too , along the lines of a souvenir one. Some of the vintage pennants were that shape.

·1 year agoMy impression was a flag. Like someone mentioned earlier a nautical flag.

·1 year agoIt reminds me of a nautical pennant. See the slight arc on the blunt end where it would be attached to a line/rope and pulling on it in the wind? Also the billowy shape like it flapping in the wind.
I believe such a pennant would signal danger flying from a boat or ship and the same on a beach or shoreline.
Of course I'm not an expert on nautical pennants but I think that's what it represents.

·1 year agoGood thought, but I disagree @roccotacodad54 . In my experience nautical signal flags are:
- shorter pointed triangles
- shorter rectangles
- shorter rectangles with a triangle cut out to make a double-pointed end
- or longer triangles with a blunt end rather than a pointed end - like someone cut the tip off the triangle
I'm not an expert, but I do have a decent amount of experience on boats.
Of course it could be a very artistic interpretation by an artist that has never been on a boat?

OP1 year agoThank you-- I like that. Kind of like a modernist brooch (for the time.) Maybe it just is what it is.

OP1 year agoThere doesn't seem to be any kind of consensus about what it would represent, so, I think random shape seems right. Thank you

OP1 year agoWicked witch hat? This is kind of like a Rorschach test. Thanks for looking-- still holding out hope that it's identifiable.
