Anyone Know Why the Back of This Stone is Engraved?
Please excuse the dog hair. I have a Golden Husky mix, so it is what it is most days.
I have a monster lot of glass faceted stones. I've had them for years and I'm just beginning to think about selling them. There are only a handful of red ones for some reason. They came from a yard sale.
This is the only one that is marked. I cannot figure out for the life of me why it's marked? None of the stones were ever set or have backing.

OP11 months agoIn retrospect you could also read it as 8261 but that makes no sense either. Either way the numbers show clearly through the glass if it's supposed to be set with the pointed side up. The lot came out of a Los Angeles yard sale years ago. The family of a jeweler was selling off his things after he passed. He could have been working in the 20's. I think I got these in like 2010 or something. I literally have thousands of unset glass stones in shades of green and blue. I cringe everytime I think about listing them.
I have not looked at each and every one, I guess it's possible others are like this and I just haven't seen them. It's a mystery. Thanks for the input!

·11 months agoHere is a guess only. My theory is that is the top side of a synthetic ruby that was once set in a class ring with a graduation year of 1928.
I've never come across anything like that in my years operating a jewelry store but could see how that could have been some newfangled offering from a class ring company back in the day.
It could also be hand-engraved glass piece. If it is glass that could still be a year with significance, but it probably wasn't in a ring since it is not all chipped up.

Wow that is strange! The font used certainly could be from that era and...... I got nothing. Maybe an engraver was practicing his craft?
