"Ruz-Roca is one of the city's newest custom businesses, but it is not a new name. It was transplanted here from Cuba, where it was a label synonymous with hand-knits for almost three decades. Otilia Ruz and Mrs. Nena Roca have their small studio at 250 East 39th Street. It is less than a year old, but it is turning out some of the painstaking and intricate designs that earned the women their original reputation. The knits are fashioned in a variety of stitches created by Miss Ruz. Some, such as a black silk dress on order for a Moroccan princess, look like a cobweb of the most fragile lace and require upward of 300 hours of labor (one row takes one hour of knitting; there are 16 rows to an inch). Other designs are heavier and use thicker needles and various weights of wool or Lurex or a combination of yarns. All of them are lined and everything can be rolled for traveling. Ruz-Roca will design a dress, copy a photograph or translate a customer's requirements. Their dresses start at $350 and their costumes at $450. A minimum of six weeks is usually required for completion. Appointments may be made by telephoning 661-4934 or 697-0742."
The company was also mentioned in the 1957 edition of The Diplomat. Only a snippet is available on the internet. It reads " ... HAVANA ... Modeled with a short bolero , this dinner dress is hand knitted with gold Lurex and a very fine silk yarn especially made in France for Ruz - Roca . Also lovely without the bolero , the dress is decolleté and suitable for ..."
