What difference does it make if you're 'joined' in a forum or not?

Just wondering if anyone has observed the purpose of the 'Join' feature for forums. The only other place I've seen that is Reddit, and if I recall right you have to join a r/group in order to start new posts within it, or at least some groups have that requirement? But here, I haven't seen any indication of the purpose.

No clue whether it was a glitch or something special about that category. What ever it was I was ticked because I do not want to be notified about new threads.

·1 month ago · EditedYou can get notifications for new topics started in all the forums you join/follow/subscribe controlled in your "Updates" section. I think all three of those terms refer to the same thing here? Joining a forum means you're following a forum, and the forum shows up in the Subscriptions section list on the side.
You can get e-mail notifications with on site notifications for new topics on those forums you follow. However on the Canadian forum at least this is hit and miss...some posts get notifications, others don't and I only see them if I check the discussions. RSS feeds were more useful on old platform.
