Employee lawsuit claims ebay was systemically abusing metrics/promoted listings.

Summary: The discussion centers around an employee lawsuit that accuses a well-known platform of systemically abusing metrics and promoted listings, possibly to the detriment of consumers. Participants express skepticism about the platform's practices, particularly criticizing a new fee related to advertising that is perceived as potentially illegal. Some call for accountability, and one participant suggests starting a crowdfunding campaign to support those affected by these practices.

Very serious if some of these allegations are true. Likely nothing comes of it and it gets swept under the rug. I've never been a fan of the lack of transparency when it comes to the metrics and promoted listings, etc. and accusations like this from former employees don't help.

"A former employee alleged that eBay perpetrated deceptive and unfair practices against marketplace sellers and advertisers who paid for Promoted Listings in her lawsuit against the company, alleging eBay may have violated federal securities laws in doing so.

The worker sued the company for employment discrimination, retaliation, and wrongful termination in federal court in Utah on May 22, 2026. Human Resources Director magazine published an article about the lawsuit on Monday and described the allegations in the complaint, noting, "The allegations have not been tested in court. eBay has not yet filed a response, and no court has ruled."

The complaint alleged that the former employee (the plaintiff) "raised concerns about the Promoted Listings program - one of eBay's largest revenue streams - to her leadership, reporting that she had become aware of conduct she reasonably believed constituted serious ethical and legal violations."

The complaint alleged that during her employment, she became aware of an "open and systemic practice within eBay in which members of a specific internal team were deliberately and artificially manipulating metrics, data, or reporting associated with eBay's Promoted Listings program."

Note that eBay is subject to an independent compliance monitor to assess its compliance program and, where appropriate, to modify that program under the terms of its Deferred Prosecution Agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts.

Last week's complaint also contained a section that alleged eBay had the former employee working on an "unpaid side project involving eBay's authenticity guarantee program," which raises questions about a program that both sellers *and* buyers use and why eBay would have employees working on the program without compensation, if true."

Please start a gofundme for this wonderful person. I would gladly donate.Ebay has some serious problems if they think they can screw consumers like this. The new any click promoted listed fee is illegal, there's no other way of putting it. "Advertising services rendered" definition has been molested and they should be held accountable

You may be on to something. Though I will say the AI monster that's eating everyone's listings appears to be pretty indiscriminate (and stupid), rather than sneaky. I suspect it will just keep gobbling things up, rather than trying to hide things where no one will ever find them.

This whole thread reminds of a little girl who snuck a book to bed and casually shoved it under her mattress when her dad cracked her bedroom door to see if she was asleep.

I stopped promoting …It didn’t do anything…. It is just a way to “show a profit for the shareholders””. We don’t matter.

That's exactly what they did. I'm noticing more and more of this sort of random zapping for no clear reason. I'm guessing there may be some fresh meat, enthusiastically keeping an eye on things just to make sure we know there's a new sheriff in town. 🤠

This thread sure got moved to completely bury/hide it. How is it not in correlation with selling?

Instead it gets buried in sub category, after sub category, after sub category, after subcategory. ebay Groups>Special Interest Groups>ebay Friends>Ebay Cafe?

Really makes me wonder what the 'new and improved' Community forums will be like.

I doubt AI will be as sneaky as its human counterparts.

@tarotfindsandmore I don't know, it could be even worse. Just look how overzealous it is with eBay listing removals.

LOL who is surprised to see this? They just dinged me for a sale yesterday that was completed mid-April. Methinks the powers that be are scrambling to scoop up whatever they can before the hammer really comes down.

I'm looking forward to seeing this particular form of abuse from the platform unravel. For anyone who says it's not going to happen, consider Amazon's losses (2.5 billion is nothing to sneeze at).

I think we're going to be seeing lots of posts like this up until the FTC comes in and (appropriately) kicks the platform in its proverbial backside. They're chasing every nickel they can right now.

I look forward to the refunds.
