Ban Alligator Alcatraz Items
Can we please ban Alligator Alcatraz items? This detention facility is unbelievably cruel, and people will suffer terribly and die. And Ebay is allowing people to make money from it. There is already a movement to get Etsy to ban these items. Come on, Ebay, do the right thing.

·1 year agoI agree, it makes me sick that people are selling this garbage. Only subhuman scumbags would profit off this. If Ebay doesn't allow Nazi merchandise, then why do they allow this **bleep**? Might as well make shirts for Dachau, Treblinka, Unit 731. It goes against their Offensive items policy and they still refuse to ban items.

·1 year agoI think you guys might be bringing awareness to the existence of the shirts and people are buying them because they like to spend money that makes you have mad feelings instead of glad feelings. I've still never seen one on here. Not am I going to search for them because I just don't care.

·1 year agoI don’t think people will suffer and die there, that’s not the American way. I think they will be processed and promptly deported. HOWEVER, I do think that the hype and the name given to the facility is in very poor taste. Why do we have to celebrate deportation? We don’t need to do that as a country. I also think that many false rumors have been going around concerning the conditions of the facility. False rumors spread fear. If people knowingly are spreading stuff like that, it is to get people upset. And it’s working. I THINK ALL OF THE ALLIGATOR ALCATRAZ MERCH SHOULD BE BANNED. POTUS went too far this time.

If the item rubs you the wrong way, then look the other way.
I do wish there were an "X" or some option on a listing to close it, so I wouldn't have to see it again. Now that would be great to have control over what I want to see or not.

·1 year agoWe get a lot of opinion masquerading as news. Some sources do a better job of identifying opinion than others.
In spite of this, people who do not pay attention and have no background in the events which make news fail to recognize what is fact and what is opinion.
Add to that the fact that many of the people we hear on the news are "experts" credentialed by someone in a manner which cannot be explained to anyone other than experts, who share their biases.
If you cannot expend the time to get news from multiple sources and know enough to exclude the self-serving **bleep** artists, you will probably be repeating something dishonest or stupid.

Ya all had no problem with the Deporter and chief putting people in cages or the previous admin and never heard a peep about humanity now you all up in a tizzy over a T-shirt because the orange man is bad. ·1 year agoSelling merch to finance a detention center is peak end stage capitalism. Also, we’re talking about undocumented people, not homeless people. Why should we take them in to our house? The vast majority of them already have a house and a job that pays for it.

In any event there is no law preventing the sale of merchandise to stupid people. Their money is just as good as anyone else and it is legal to relieve them of it.

Yes - more polite words commonly used for people buying ridiculous items such as gold painted sneakers are credulous... gullible... uneducated... I could go on... but the point was that no matter how stupid the item is there will be someone well-matched to buy it.
These Alligator Alcatraz items are no different. They say way more about the buyer than he may think but there is no reason not to sell to him. If they are legal to sell elsewhere and Ebay permits their sale here then go for it.

·1 year agoWe can't stop poor taste. I see this stuff for what it is, weak men looking to intimidate and get something over on others. The simple I bought this at a truck stop attire. I use to chuckle at Live Laugh Love shirts, but at least Linda wasn't trying to intimidate anyone with them.

·1 year agoPersonally don't think anything should be banned except for images of kids. Other than that I think we should be able to sell what we want. I don't like Hitler but I sure as heck don't think all the Nazi militaria, books and such should be banned. History is history. But eBay can make its own decisions and we as sellers must oblige. It doesn't bother me if Gator gitmo shirts are being sold, I think it's tacky and silly but to each his own. Btw the term Gator gitmo is quite funny.

·1 year agoYep, that's how I do it on a dry erase board on the wall right above my monitor. Most of the sellers on my banned sellers list are from these boards (not you). only a couple are from purchases gone sideways.
I like it when a seller with things I might be interested in shows their behind and gives me a heads up not to buy from them.

I don't really care about their ideology but I do care about the way they handle problems and their attitude towards their customers.

·1 year agoOK. I don't care about their views on politics, religion or anything else for that matter. I only put sellers on that list that show poor customer service. I don't care what they think or believe, just how they treat their customers.

·1 year agoThat's all that matters. A few years back we had some people over for a BBQ and I was watching an old episode of Ted Nuggets hunting show. My wife's friend said to me how could I stand to watch that guy knowing his politics. I laughed and said I don't give a crap about his politics i care that he knows how to hunt, clean and prepare javalina properly. And let's face it, Stranglehold is easily one of the greatest songs ever written. It's the Yankees equivalent of "Free Bird". Doesn't come close to FB, but he tried.

·1 year agoI am more worried about the Alligators around the facility. If those that arrive there play by the rules they will be just fine. But then again they haven't played by the rules to get there in the first place. I believe people have a right to come the the USA if the do it the correct way just like my Grandparent's did.

I don't envision anyone escaping and not turning right back around to go back.
I used to live in Nevada where they put most prisons out in unforgiving desert areas. It wasn't uncommon to hear about a prison escape where the escapees were found walking back to the prison after thay realized what they had got themselves into, all dehydrated and sunburned.
Just like the swamps, a bad place to be on foot without the proper gear to survive.

·1 year agoI have often found that those who profess outrage over one thing or another, or who support some non-common sense idea, are the last ones to ever open their wallet or the door to their home for those they say are afflicted. It is easy to type words on a page. It is much harder to actually make a difference. I've seen this with both those who believe as I do and those who don't.
People have a right to buy and not buy what they want. With few limitations, people should be able to sell what they want. Freedom. That's what makes America - America. A part of that is that private companies also have a right to regulate, in this instance, what their users can sell on their platform. So if eBay were to make these items off-limits, I'd 100% support their right to do so and advocate the rules should be followed.

·1 year agoIronically what you say reminds of how every year I go back to Georgia for Christmas and my father's church has a thing they do where they get all the donated goods from town and pack up back packs for the Vets and Homeless shelter. Every year my dad says there should be 40 or 50 that will be there to pack them and then take them over to the shelter, sadly every year only 7 or 8 people show up. The congregation is around 200 or so. Also reminds me of how that big rich evangelical guy in Houston didn't bother to open the doors to his church when the city flooded.

·1 year agoI don't want to derail the topic of this thread, but sadly your story is exactly how it almost always works. You have 5% of a congregation that do all the work and that greatly limits what can be done. The loudmouths though, they will be first ones at a protest.

·1 year agoReminds me of a joke a preacher friend told me of a poor guy that made it big and moved into a rich neighborhood. When he went to the new church they wanted to do a background check. He went home that night and prayed telling the big guy his disbelief of their request. The big guy responded "Don't worry my son, I've been trying to get in there for years and they don't trust me either"
It didn't go exactly like that but you get the jist. I can't tell it like Dan told me. He is a different kind of preacher and uses words that some find offensive but he does get his message across.............

·1 year agoI've personally seen a lot of unusual or un-Christian things (IMO) go on at churches over the years. When I was a teenager (a long time ago), we started attending a new church. My dad always believed in tithing but at one point he got laid off from his job and couldn't pay the tithe. He actually got a letter from the church threatening to turn him over to a collection agency if he didn't pay. Needless to say, he sent them back a letter telling them to take a flying leap (or whatever he said) and we never went back to that church again.

·1 year agoMy neighbor told me he had taken a local guy to his old village in Mexico one trip and for some reason they were all barefoot and when the guy stepped into a patch of hot sand jumped about 3 feet straight up. Rafael thought that was pretty funny. He also brung home a Sonoran wife one trip. She did not like it here at all. To many trees and too cold made her claustrophobic and constantly ill. A nice lady though.

Just look at all the banned Dr Seuss books on here...sellers even use the word "Banned" in the title as a marketing promotion tool.

·1 year agoNot all the Dr. Seuss books are 'banned' - only certain titles that were withdrawn at the request of the family estate. (No doubt some of the withdrawn titles are listed here anyway and some others are advertised as 'banned' when they are really not. I doubt that Ebay really cares all that much about the Dr. Seuss titles.)

·1 year agoIt's kind of predictable: there will be a big tizzy of outrage over something or other, various items will get banned, and then after a few weeks or months, people get over it, or are distracted with the next shiny thing to ban, and eventually the banned items will slowly return to listing here, as the original outrage gets forgotten and replaced with a new one.
For example, they went through a phase some years back where you couldn't list any Dukes of Hazzard items because of the Confederate theme and the fact that the TV show's Dodge Charger "General Lee" had the Confederate battle flag (the Stars and Bars) on its roof. That was then, but a quick search for Dukes of Hazzard memorabilia tonight shows that they're all back now: model cars, trucks, playing cards and other items, all wearing that flag once again.
Okay, yes, it was silly, but this is eBay's sandbox, so sometimes this will happen, and everyone runs around in circles with their hair on fire, but eventually the excitement wears off, and things return to whatever passes for normal around here.

And yet there are all kinds of anti Trump merchandise being sold on ebay clearly violating his copyright.

But as for whom I may buy from or sell to, that's not something I worry about.
I don't care if someone that agrees or disagrees with my views buy my items, nor do I care if I agree with a seller's views or not. But its when those views (regardless which) are presented by that person as the only view that is permitted, that's when I draw the line.
Opinions are like A holes. Everyone has one. No reason to shun each other for their opinion. But that's my view.

However, try to keep it civil. There is no reason to not have an intelligent discussion without resorting to hard stances or posturing.ðŸ˜

I agree that online platforms should not be selling merch for any detention center. That we can agree but to say this facility is cruel is a falsehood. It will be clean, A/C on and fully staffed.
This Florida center will temporarily hold illegals that have committed crimes, some horrific in nature before returning to their place of origin.

·1 year agoThey are in a swamp. In a tent. In Florida heat and humidity. If you think AC is going to make a dent in that, you are a fool. There is no keeping mosquitos out. It already was flooding when Trump toured it. How can it be clean when they are are packing 1000 people in one caged area? Really? One sick contagious person comes in and it will spread. What happens if it lightning storms and they're in cages inside a tent? What about when a hurricane rolls through?
None of these people have received due process so no, they won't all be 'illegals who did horrific crimes'. We won't know who they are or what they did. Guidelines for taking care of children and pregnant women have already leaked - they hardly sound like the worst of the worst.
Prisoners are already reporting spoiled food, non working toilets, lack of basic hygiene, and extreme temperatures.
We don't even treat serial killers like this in our prisons.

The reason they have non working toilets is because they try to flush blankets and anything else they can stop up the plumbing.
They get free meals, free housing and a free plane ticket back home.
They have it a lot better then they will when they get back to their countries.

What the last administration did was extremely cruel. Many didn't make it across the border because they died before getting here. You must have the missed the pictures where Biden was jamming them into cages, men, women and children sleeping on the ground with no blankets. Really inhuman treatment!

One thing that may be important to note is that as far as making any kind of judgement call for enforcement on this, Etsy is in a very different position than eBay as far as written policies and how they might apply.
Etsy changed their Prohibited Item policies last year to (among other things) include immigration status as an explicit "protected class."
"Etsy does not allow items or listings with violent or degrading language toward people based upon: race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, immigration status, or caste (collectively, “protected classesâ€). We also prohibit items or content that promote organizations with such views."
It's still a bit vague and subjective as to whether many of these related items include "violent or degrading language" in order to qualify to be removed under that policy, but it's at least not an unreasonable stretch to suggest at least some of the items might.
eBay's prohibited item policies are nowhere near that explicit and don't have nearly that clear/direct of a case to be made for why these items might violate stated policies and thus should be removed.
People on any side of a hot button issue are of course free to advocate for companies like eBay and Etsy to take certain actions or make public statements in support of or opposition to such things but ultimately these marketplaces are likely to fall back on their stated legal policies, so I wouldn't expect to see eBay easily swayed on this one.
But the cool thing about freedom is it includes your right not to sell or purchase such items and to advocate your position to try to voluntarily convince others to do the same. 😊
