Why Does eBay Block Advertising When Sellers Need It Most?
Summary: keota-brown expresses frustration about eBay preventing Below Standard sellers from using Promoted Listings, arguing that it hinders their ability to recover sales volume and improve their standing. They share personal circumstances that affected their seller rating and suggest that advertising could aid recovery. eoma689485 advises increasing transaction volume with low-cost items to dilute defects. kensgiftshop shares a past experience of recovering without promotions by reducing prices. keota-brown appreciates the advice and plans to reduce prices instead of relying on advertising.
I would like to understand the reasoning behind preventing Below Standard sellers from using Promoted Listings.
When sellers fall Below Standard, eBay tells them they must complete more successful transactions to improve their rating. However, eBay then removes their ability to advertise and reduces their listings’ visibility. That makes it significantly harder to obtain the sales required to recover.
I am willing to pay eBay to advertise my listings, improve my sales, and rebuild my account’s standing—but eBay will not allow me to do that. How does this benefit anyone, including eBay?
Advertising could actually be part of a structured recovery process. For example, eBay could allow Below Standard sellers to use limited Promoted Listings while monitoring their performance. Sellers would have an opportunity to complete successful transactions, buyers would remain protected, and eBay would earn advertising and selling fees.
Instead, the current system creates a nearly impossible cycle: sellers need more sales to improve, but the tools that could help generate those sales are taken away.
For context, I have generated approximately $51,000 in eBay sales over roughly the past two years, and I was previously a Top Rated Seller. My account did not fall Below Standard because I suddenly stopped caring about my customers or my responsibilities. I experienced serious personal circumstances involving health issues and a period when my partner required nearly full-time care. Unfortunately, this caused me to ship some orders late.
I understand that late shipments affect buyers, and I take responsibility for that. However, those issues arose during a difficult and temporary period—they do not represent my overall history as a seller. I still maintain 99% positive feedback, which demonstrates that the overwhelming majority of my customers have been satisfied.
A seller’s entire history, sales volume, feedback rating, and individual circumstances should count for something. There should be a reasonable recovery option for established sellers who experienced a temporary setback and are actively trying to correct it.
Has anyone found an effective way to advertise their eBay listings while Below Standard? Does anyone else believe eBay should offer limited advertising or a probationary recovery program so sellers have a realistic path back to good standing?

·1 month agoI fell below a couple times years ago and pulled out of it without promoting.
Reduce prices on some items to get them moving until above.
I didn't care if I made anything but I pulled myself out of below standard pretty quick.
As far as promoting, I still don't use it.

OPSep 18, 2026 at 5:37 AMThank you, I’m starting to realize I really probably don’t need to advertise after all. I’m going to take your advice and lower my prices. Thanks for responding! 🙂

·1 month agoTo fix your defect rate, you need to increase your total transaction count as fast as possible to dilute the percentage of bad transactions.
Find small, cheap, easy-to-ship items that you can sell at or near cost. Price these items to move quickly. The goal here is not profit; it is to up your transaction volume to mathematically wash out the late shipment defects.
Offer free shipping and same day or 1 day handling.

OPSep 18, 2026 at 5:39 AMThank you! I really appreciate the advice. I’m going to give this a try and hopefully work my way out of this mess sooner rather than later. Are there any particular types of small, inexpensive items you’ve found sell quickly and are easy to ship? I’d love any suggestions on what I should focus on selling for the time being.
