Promoted Listings, Promoted Offsite -- Can anyone help with cost analysis? Are they worth doing? | eBay Advertising

I have been a part-time seller for over 25yrs. I recently have started ramping up in to a full-time status seller. We have been experimenting with all the different campaigns offered by Ebay. We can't seem to find a happy medium between advertising costs and profit margins. If we don't use promotions we don't have any sales. When we do use them we seem to spend more on advertising then we are making. All these promotion tools are getting confusing when it comes down to saving our bottom line. Just trying to see what others are experiencing and see if anyone out there can help us "trim the fat" when it comes to all the fees
