Selling fees
I’m trying to get clarification on selling electronic equipment. eBay fee is 13.25%.
I didn’t realize this percentage was also applied to the shipping fee paid by the buyer. Doesn’t seem right. Thanks for any info.

·1 year agoThe final value fee is applied to the total transaction. Sell price+shipping charge+sales tax.
Once upon a time Ebay did not apply it to the shipping charge or sales tax. Guess what sellers did, they reduced the sell price and raised the shipping, which lowered the sales tax as well in many states.
Ebay does what most online marketplaces do to avoid past seller fee avoidance.
Please note, a side effect of these fees is that it makes sellers consider whether an item is worth offering on Ebay. When an item fails to sell, Ebay does not profit. Many items offered on this site are not worth the cost of shipping. When a seller lists them, they waste not only their own time but cost Ebay money which will never be recovered on a sale.

·1 year agoI can understand eBay collecting a commission for the item and the shipping. The seller/buyer pays shipping if its included in the price or if its a separate line item. I DO have a hard time understanding why eBay collects a commission from the seller when the buyer is obligated to pay sales tax. Why doesn't eBay collect the sales tax commission from the juristiction it is collecting for/ and the juristiction it is paying to. WOULD a car salesman or the dealership where he was selling the automobile collect a commission on top of any sales tax that a car purchase warrants? regardless of which jurisdiction is lawfully due the sales tax, i fairly sure they would not be entitled to 15% of any sales tax.

·1 year agoAll payment processors charge companies the fee on the tax. Paypal does the same thing.
Ebay is not your employer. You hired ebay to perform a service. You are ebays buyer.
