What was this Italian leather box/case from Barneys NY used for?

I would like to know what this box was used for or what it held. Jewelry? Poker chips? It measures approximately 7"x7"x3". Its interior is lined with velvet. Possibly leather. Any info would be appreciated.

I'd broaden that to jewelry but the photo isn't clear enough to see if there are small square sections for cufflinks, tie clips, plus watches.
