What are these marks on outside bottom of Waterford Crystal vase? How to describe?
Hi, so I have this Waterford Crystal vase I am in the process of listing. On the outside bottom of the vase are marks/lines that look to me like heavy wear or grinding marks. One of the marks is partially hiding the Waterford mark. They have no effect on the looks of the piece and only seen when turned over. I do not know how they got there nor how to properly describe them. Any advice would be appreciated.

·2 years agoI was just wondering if Waterford sells "seconds" and if they do, how are those pieces distinguished from "firsts?" For example, Meissen will do a single grind through the mark for a second, and up to three strikes through their maker's mark for what I guess would be called "fourths," but of course that's not a term you hear.
Just a thought as well, the font is right for Waterford, but the placement of the mark seems to be too small to allow for WATER to fit in front of the "FORD" mark that's visible in this picture. Maybe it's just a trick of the image.
That grind mark was almost certainly made with a wheel, intentionally. Not really something I've ever seen in Waterford, but the newer stuff may be different.
If you know the pattern is w'ford, then I'd see if perhaps it's a good, but not perfect piece that was sold as a second.
And I'm glad you posted this here before going to the glass and pottery board, just so we can have a reference if this shows up in the future.

·1 year agoJust came across this and I wanted you to know that Waterford has never sold seconds of its handblown Made in Ireland Waterford at least here in the United States. I worked for Waterford for many years and they destroy the imperfect What they did sell in their Waterford outlets? Was Waterford Marquis seconds and they came in plain white cardboard boxes, not the typical blue That they've used for decades
