Trying to identify an old quilt
My sister recently passed away, and amongst her possessions was this shadow-box framed quilt. A neighbor suggested it might be a Jewish crazy quilt. I have no idea what "BARD" is or means in the center of the quilt. I'd just like to know where it might be from and how old it is. Thanks for any input.

Significance of "BARD?"

·2 years agoYes, it us a crazy quilt.
It was probably framed for sentimental reasons not because it was a work of art, or an excellent example of a crazy quilt. The fabric choices appear to be quite inexpensive, and the stitchery simple and not extremely skillful.
The likelihood is this was a quilt for the crib of some child in the family.
In my recent experience, crazy quilts are not bringing prices they did in the past. I have recently bought some partial crazy quilt squares with finer fabric and more ornate needlework for a pittance.

As the saying goes: "Sew hundreds of quilts and wear hundreds of clothes." In the early society, there was a custom of hundreds of quilts. When the baby in the family was 100 days old, the parents would visit each house to collect some fabrics and put them on the ground. The fabric is sewn into a hundred quilts.Baijia quilt has a beautiful meaning, that is, to accept the blessings of hundreds of families, and children grow up safely.
There are many similarities between Jewish culture and Chinese culture, and I suspect it's not a coincidence.

·2 years agoTalk about being blonde. 😄
I kept wondering about the first picture and see that reflection.
Duh!
Now I realized that it is in a picture frame with a glass front.
That is a baby quilt, for that size frame.

·2 years agoI believe the word is BABY.
Definitely an old crazy quilt, but it almost looks like "BABY" is machine embroidered. ( But then, I have been told that some of my embroidery work looks like machine done. )
Need a clearer picture of that.

·2 years agoBABY makes sense. I do think that's it.

·2 years agoTo me the embroidered word looks like BARN and the quilted pieces right above the word look like a Barn.

·2 years agoI don't see anything above the embroidered word that looks like anything at all.

I agree that "BABY" would make a lot more sense, especially if the quilt is an appropriate size for a lap quilt or baby quilt. The very narrow bar across the bottom of the letter suggests that "R" is more likely than "B", but who knows with embroidered Old English letters.

·2 years agoI don't think that embroidered word says "BARD".
The first and third letters look exactly the same to me, they both appear to be "R", and I think the last letter might be "Y". So, possibly "RARY", and it might be a name? I can't tell if it is embroidered by hand or machine, from the pictures.
Why do you think there might be a Jewish attribution?
