Thoughts on painting
Can anyone tell me anything about this painting on canvas panel of a ship. It is signed- looks like E M Skiff or Skipp? I can see brush strokes so think it is a painting.

·3 years agoI read F.R. Skitt or Skiff (I think the doubled terminal letters look more like Ts than FS.)

·3 years agoGosh, and I see no resemblance in style or skill. Strisik was quite a fine painter, and you don't see generic stuff in his work, nor "historical" or fantasy stuff. He painted what he saw, and often working en plein air.

·3 years agoI have the advantage over you of being very old and having looked at and talked about thousands of paintings, in galleries and museums and artists' studios, and in books and catalogues and on-line.
After you've looked at a lot of art, you begin to see the difference between generic art and non-, and I'd say the key thing is particularity. In the real thing, every element is particular -- specifc and unique to one moment in time and space, and to one moment in the mind and the eye of the painter. You see that in your painting of the trawler by Strisik. It's absent from OP's painting of the square-rigged ship.

·3 years agoHere's what I can tell you; it's painted on a Morilla canvas board which dates to the 30/40's (est) . It has a beginner look to it and possibly a copy.. Fine ship's portraits are just that, finer. A proper cleaning would do wonders but that type of art board can be hard to clean. I don't know who Skiff is.

·3 years agoAll I can tell you is that a corporation search shows that The Morilla Company was in business from 1934 to 1982, HQed in NY, so that gives you a bit of a date range. (Of course, someone could have found an unused Morilla canvas panel last week and painted on it, but I don't think that's the case here.)
As for the painting itself, there are a million similar ones, as such nautical art has been popular forever, but I don't know enough about sailing ships and how they sail to tell the good from the bad.
