I'd appreciate your help with identifying the maker of this cigarette box with a silver lid. The mark is FG 800 and small stamped logo. I'm trying to identify the country of origin, maker, and age.
Thank you everyone for trying to help. I put the picture in ChatGPT and it suggests that this is an Italian table cigarette box made by a local silversmith, who may be registered or not from the 1920s.
did AI mention the very special wood? likely burl walnut. European likely, Italy only maybe (one of several European choices). your AI could not read the silver marks, you need a person that can read and comprehend what the marks tell them. Pretty sure they will reveal all you need to know (about age and maker) if shown to the right expert.
AI is helpful no doubt, but not the be all to end all. I would take suggestion from AI about maker (local) and age (1920s) with a grain of salt without confirmation elsewhere (silver expert). Collecting is a hobby of mine since the 1960s, AI since the 1990s.
have you tried looking up 'Silver Hallmarks' to see if you can find you item's hallmark. I know there used to be a couple of sites that had pictures of the different hallmarks, but it's been too long for me to remember specific ones.
Maybe google a picture of the hallmark Or make a drawing of it, then take a picture of it and google that?????
FG 800 - a silver mark, 80% silver (sterling is 92.5%). Mark is usually found on European silver. Small stamped "logo" may be silver hallmark. If that is the case, identifying the mark is important. Without more info - nearly impossible to identify maker or age from photographs.
there are more than 800 ebay auctions at present if you search ebay for 800 silver cigarette box. Doing so (using words given) may help find answers to your questions.
