Japanese/Chinese vintage bowl help
I have done some google image searches but can't find info on the provenance of this vintage bowl. There is an imprint on the back but it's almost impossible to read; the only letters i can make out are _EHWOR_
It;;s ceramic or porcelain, measures 6 "across and just over an inch high.

i found this that seems to be the same imprint, even the little dots after the numbers are the same idea. Fu dogs are also similar. 🤗

·2 years agoYes, that does appear to be a similar pattern, except for the blue color touching the Fu dogs. That seller also had a lot of trouble getting a legible picture of the ASHWORTH imprint, but this one is pretty good.

It occurred to me, from the size (6" diameter) that your piece might be a saucer (for a teacup) rather than a shallow bowl. Early saucers were like this, without the indent for the foot of the cup. That might explain why the design is off center; so that it wouldn't be blocked by the cup.

Looking at the enlarged picture of the embossed mark, I think it might end in "_ _ _ WORTH".

I enhanced the mark as much as I could:
I agree, figuring out what that mark says is crucial to identifying the maker. I also agree this is more likely to be English or European, in the Asian style. The marks don't look Asian.
Possibly "ASHWORTH"? The impressed mark on this piece is hard to read, but legible, and looks quite similar. This item is identified as Ashworth Bros. (England, 19h century) who appear to have made a lot of Asian-style pieces.

OP2 years agoThis looks so plausible! I’ll report back after trying to get a better view of the mark. Thank you so much.

OP2 years agoI totally concur that it’s ASHWORTH. Thanks again for you brilliant help!

·2 years agoNot Chinese nor Japanese but rather an English or Continental adaption of an Asian style. Looks to be late 19th century. The red hand lettering bits are the modeler's marks.

OP2 years agoThanks! I find it unusual that the design is off-center. I wonder why.

·2 years agoOkay. Do you own a loupe or other extremely high magnification lens?
Your only hope is to identify the impressed mark I'm assuming you are referring to when you had a guess at the letters? Yes?
If so, you should use silly putty or clay to try and get an impression. Failing that, you could dust it with charcoal or very finely ground cinnamon and try to take a macro picture of the mark.
I'm very interested in what you find. @bluecabochon

OP2 years agoWow, thank you so much! I’ll certainly try to get a better idea of the imprint.

OP2 years agoThe cinnamon trick didn’t work for me and I do have a loupe, but I think the ASHWORTH suggestion is IT. Thank you for your help; I’ve learned a lot on this thread!
