I need help naming and dating this.
I can't find anything quite like this. The little sticker on the underside says either 1837 or 1887. It has a bracket on the back but I am unsure how it would have hooked onto anything. Any help is appreciated.

·4 months agoBonjour,
I have a slight doubt:
The few candle-watch holders I’ve sold all had the candle holder at the top and the hook for the watch at the bottom and on the side.
Which makes sense if you want to avoid burning yourself when removing the watch.
The small porcelain dish was used to catch any hot wax that might drip; it could be removed for cleaning, and the signature was always perfectly visible.
But that’s just my opinion, and it applies only to French pieces from before 1880.
Best regards.

It's quite fascinating!

·4 months agoBonjour,
For me,it appears to be a homemade contraption in the style of what is known in French as a “rat de cave” from the late 19th century:
A candlestick that could be held in the hand, placed on a flat surface, or hung on a nail (this type of object has been around for as long as cellars have existed) .
Indeed, the ring for the index finger and the small curved platform for the thumb are missing; these elements allowed it to be held without risking burning one’s hands on the hot wax. This design also contributed to the overall balance, making it possible to set it down.
What intrigues me is the small round platform with a hole in the middle that corresponds to a larger hole on the base.??
A Mystery Object that, in my opinion, will require the input of dozens of people in order to provide a complete answer.
