Help with 1954 Singer Sewing Machine
I know nothing about sewing machines. I found this one at an estate sale and before I list it for sale I'd like to know how it operates, and if it is missing something. The ones I've seen online have either a hand crank or a belt that I assume attaches to some sort of foot pedal. This one does not have either and it appears not to have any place that a belt could go. It is a 1954 model. How is it operated? Any info is appreciated.

·2 years agoIn the second picture, that is the set up of the bobbin winding.
On the outside of the side wheel is a smaller wheel. If you turn the small wheel, it will release the sewing head from working and it would be ready to use the bobbin rewind.
The spool goes on the metal post at the bottom, and then unwind the thread and bring it through the lower guide. Place the end of the thread through the small hole of the bobbin and place on bobbin bar. Press down on the unit and the thread guide will lower onto the spool and the rubber wheel ( that needs replacing) with also drop down against the wheel. Just add some power and the bobbin will start to fill.
The stitch guide is in the "circle" area.
The knob control the slide plate where the numbers are. You loosen the knob and select the number of stitches you want and then "lock" the knob. This will keep the lever from from getting the wrong number of stitches if you go back and forth with the reverse. ( Above the numbers is the reverse section ) This is what I love about this machine. I love it for quilting and such. My newer Singer, I have to hold down the reverse and I don't love working on quilts with it.
Remember, after filling the bobbins to tighten the outer wheel knob to engage the sewing head.

It is electric. That side plug should be a split cord that has a foot control and power cord attached.
The machine is anchored in 2 placed on the backside to the cabinet. Pull back on the machine and it will open the cabinet from the top side. Look inside. They may have the foot pedal on the front side inside that will have a knee control that presses against the "foot pedal". The power cord may be wrapped up inside there too.
That cabinet looks like it can be used with the foot pedal on the floor or to place it under the machine/ in the cabinet to use the knee bar.

OP2 years agoThanks for your help! Yes, it has a knee bar! It was pivoted up under the cabinet so I didn't see it. It seems to work great! Hope you get yours back soon.
