Help please to identify place of creation of this Central American applique pillow case
Hello,
Can someone please identify the location of creation for this vintage pillow case? I believe it is from the 1960s, from Central America, but specific information would be welcomed. I'm sure it's part of a genre but I don't know what that is.

OP2 years agoI have another question. As I only recently acquired this item and was given no information about its history other than it was acquired on a trip to Central & South America decades ago, can anyone shed light on whether the muslin used actually looked like this at the point of creation or are those age spots? What makes me wonder about this is that there are no corresponding age or water spots on the embroidered/applique front of the pillow case.
Honestly, I don't know whether the piece would have value to another or whether it should be tossed. Your thoughts?

·2 years agoI think it is a wonderful piece and I think it is a valuable historic and cultural piece that tells a story. Maybe you can get more info from a university with this type of cultural studies or possibly a museum of this subject area.
I don't think the fabric looked like this when it was new. I wouldn't clean it until you got input from a museum or university.

I think it is a charming piece of folk art with some modest, but nice, age to it, and I would say that it is definitely worth offering for sale.

·2 years agoYou're welcome. Just a final thought: I would list it as a cushion cover rather than as a pillow case, because of its shape and because I think that opens it up more possibilities for use / display in any room or context.

·2 years agoÑapanguita is the word and it seems to refer to Colombia and/or Ecuador. One reference defines it as a "costume" and there are musical groups on Youtube that use it in the title. I'm sure others here will be more informative than I can be.

·2 years agoThe "IVV " is part of the design I believe as it continues. The "EZ" may be the artist's initials.

·2 years agoI have seen folk art wall hangings made in similar style from the Andes region of South America (primarily Peru and Ecuador). The first embroidered word or words is probably the name of the person who made the piece, but I am unable to discern what that name might be. I do speak Spanish but I can't make out what the letters might spell in terms of words that could be the title of the piece, as I have seen on similar wall hangings. The second embroidered word appears to be "Napanguita" (the tilde on the first N makes that letter an en-ye) which I am unable to translate. It seems to relate to a type of music in Ecuador called San Juanito. This is not particularly helpful to you but perhaps that word indicates the piece was made in Ecuador.
