·2 years agoCould someone explain to me the difference between a late 18th-century and an early 19th-century neck scarf? They all look the same in these old portraits. Did they change the date when it was called one or the other?
Also, I misquoted (The Skater by Stuart seen in my link when I meant The Skating Minister by Raeburn seen here.

·2 years agoReminds me a bit of The Skater by Gilbert Stuart and the neck scarf looks 18th c as well. If there are miter joins on the stretcher then 185o's + but blunt cuts we'll be looking at pre 1850s.

·2 years agoHave you taken it out of the frame to see if there might be a signature hidden by the frame?
And if you will provide a good photo of the back, that will help determine its age and, possible, gives clues as to its origin (American vs European, say).

·2 years agoSo, like I said, these blunt cuts (form a strainer) (as opposed to miter cuts that are called a keyed stretcher) help date the painting to 1850/60 back, Could be 18th cent. These elements evolved over time.

OP2 years ago This is as detailed as it gets. Could be some nobility designation or military Award? I'm sure there must be someone out there that has a better idea. Maybe I should post in the area where people collect medals

·2 years agoYou should, there is enough there for someone to make out the form. Try the military board. Post the results here when underway but just post it here on this thread don't open multiple threads here it gets too confusing. I think the neck scarf provides more promise. Were you going to post those links you spoke of?

Probably not an American military award, considering the period of the clothing. The Congressional Medal of Honor was inaugurated in 1862, and was one of the earliest (if not THE earliest) metallic medals awarded in the United States; but that clothing is just too early for 1862.
So maybe European? France or Great Britain?

OP2 years agoWhen I first looked at it I thought Britain but I can't find anything that looks like it except one that is much larger and is a lapel label.
I did post hear about it. Waiting to hear back. I'm also gonna contact some dealers in medals.
