Antique tool (?) Identification Assistance
Anybody have any idea what this might be? Approximately 7†in length - the metal rod piece appears to have grease on it. No markings. I’m stumped as was the previous owner. They thought-it might be a plug gage but I have my doubts about that. Any thoughts / suggestions? Thanks in advance

·1 year agoI can't tell from the photos (and my old eyes) - are there markings on the metal part, or just scrapes? If scrapes, just random lines or are they pre-fixed patterns?
Lastly, was this found amongst other items or tools that might give a hint (for example, at a dentist's office or a watchmaker's shop)?
sorry - you ask one question and I respond with three.

·1 year agoIf the steel rod is hardened, it could be a burnishing tool. It us used to create the burr on a card scraper.

·1 year agoThat is my thought as well. Some sort of burnishing tool. The sleeve/scabbard would be to protect it from damage that might render it unusable (at least to some degree).

OP2 years agoIt has grease on it - I assume for lubrication of some sort??? I don’t think that would be on a fire starter?? Thanks for the suggestion though.

·2 years agoWhen people store tools they sometimes wipe them down with oil. If there is no oil at hand but there is grease, it is a good replacement. I've seen both. Firestarter was just a guess because no one else seems to of cracked the code.

OP2 years agoI don’t think so as it’s not ridged like a knife sharpener- just a crude metal rod.
