·3 years agoI could not find anything by this artist but there was however an actor by that name who passed away in 2003. I am not sure but sometimes actors or writers also make art sometimes. That might be another angle to approach the piece but not sure. Best of luck.

·3 years agoPlease see if you can make out a name, words or (abbr.) date around the bottom right. Looks like there's a sig, maybe a title/year.

·3 years agoIt may be that someone (John Durren) was trying to impress someone else with the gift of another unidentified artist. The reason I say this is the title and number on the back is in a different hand than the "Durren writing." It would explain the frame being papered and the difference in handwriting on the reverse.
However, it would take some real chutzpah to get a gold sharpie and sign your own name to the front while then adding an inscription on the back, but those are definitely two different people's script on the reverse.
It's a fun mystery, regardless.

·3 years agoI searched artist databases and couldn't find a match for John Durren spelled the way this artist clearly spells his name. Can you post a picture of the signature on the front of the piece? It may have clues as to how best to search him. Ex. J. Durren or E.J.D. etc.
Also, can you tell what the symbol by the 22,000 number is? It looks like it was "adjusted" by turning a 1 into a 2. If it's a dollar sign, that is an artist who should be listed somewhere.
Another thing that's strange...
The #166 to the left -- numerically sequenced art is only done in cases where it is reproduced in a set quantity. Like limited edition print runs, bronze sculpture castings, and, in newer instances (last 20 years) with Giclée prints of original oil on canvas works. Giclées can be numbered, but it's a pretentious and effectively meaningless practice, since print plates and bronze molds can and are (in ethical practice) destroyed once the series max number has been reached. A Giclée is always able to be reproduced, so there's no way to ensure against further reproduction unless the original is destroyed.
Maybe Mr. Durren was an odd duck who counted the number of canvases he put out into the world. Very unusual, but plausible.
It is very unlikely this is a Giclée. It's been around a good while -- notice the water stain and yellowing of the back canvas.
It's also a bit odd that the frame was originally papered over the back and was either reused from another piece of art and signed by the artist later or scavenged by the artist and signed contemporarily. Third and most likely is that the canvas was sold or gifted without a frame and the owner found and repurposed a nice one that fit later on.
It's a nice piece, and it looks like it's quite big. Unfortunately, I'm at a loss for further identification of the artist and age.
Please post anything else in addition to the front signature, label residue, canvas edges, brand on frame, etc.
