A few words regarding
South Marble Island: 1997 Heron & Mrs Heron were passengers on a small ship that
specialized in Eco-tours. We passed fairly close to South Marble Island enroute to view the glacier. Many 'growlers' were being pushed out of the glacier into Glacier Bay. Several young people on the eco tour were hollering about 'icebergs' in the water. Heron explained that the small chunks of ice are called 'growlers'. One of the tour directors went to speak with the Capt of the small ship (255 feet). She returned and told the passengers that Heron was correcto mucho regarding growlers. Then that evening Heron was asked to be a speaker at the after dinner meeting. Heron explained that the USCG Cutter Spencer was pressed into International Ice Patrol duty for about 1 month. Cruising off southern tip of Greenland. We saw hundreds of 'growlers' and several huge ice bergs. The ice bergs were tracked by Spencer and information of speed and heading of icebergs was relayed by Morse Code message to Coast Guard HQ Washington DC. Then relayed to international ice patrol HQ.
Always something of interest in coin & token collecting. A fun hobby for a lifetime!

OP1 year agoYikes! The first 42 island coins & tokens were collected from April 1946 to end of October 2024. Then starting in 1st week of November 2024 to present the Alt Heron added 173. The Alt Heron is considering a pause on the collecting of island issues. He still has some 'wants' for paper money. And then perhaps resume islands in the next world...!
