i have a set of sterling flatware that my dad bought in the 50's... it has a little sentimental value because of that, but that's about it... i have much more meaningful memorabilia... i don't have any plans to sell it, but if it was eat and pay rent or sell, you'd better believe it would be gone...
An unfortunate side effect of this I fear will be nice sterling flatware, serving ware etc. melted down and lost forever.
History is full of examples of precious items melted and lost forever. I visited the Museo del Oro in Bogota many years ago and the golden Incan treasures the conquistadors missed were stunning. How many such objects were melted into ingots or doubloons no one really knows.
It makes me wonder how many coins will meet the same fate.......................................
This has been going on with coins since 1965 though, about 60 years. The culls might get melted to use in industry, but a nice coin will always be more valuable than a bullion bar or round, even if its just by a percent or two. I don't think the motivation will ever be there to spend the money melting something down to fabricate something new of less value.
Do you see any MS60+ Morgans selling for less (per oz pure silver) than like graded silver eagles? If some common date VF Morgan gets melted, is it that much of a loss? Now Kennedy halves? Yes, I can see some MS60 1964's and up getting melted. How many do you need in your collection?
Kennedy halves. Not all that precious now but what about in 50, 60 or 70 years?
I was just expressing my distaste of melting already made items (unless mangled or something) for melt value. It's just a sad thing for me to see is all.........................

They minted a ton of the 64's and since silver was gone the following year, none of them were in general circulation very long. There were about 90M 1963 Franklins and 425M 1964 Kennedys. I agree with you to a point, but I also think anything that is going to be worth more than its silver content 100 years from now is probably worth more than its silver content today.
I'm stuck. I can't buy at this level for inventory, and risk having the price collapse. Guess I'm selling until my inventory is depleted and then see how it goes. Coin show season starts in March.
that sounds like the smart move... if it goes up, you still made a heckuva profit... if it goes down, you sold at the right time...
i'm still going to wait and see... i'm not a dealer though... most of what i have i bought under $30, both bullion and coins, so unless the bottom falls out i'll still make money... eventually...
Buy when the mint price the ounce at $97 when it was 65 then changed it to $179 they knew ware the price is going now it will be $125 in A month, if it's 101 now its 125 on eBay now because of shipping its yours do what you think 2 beans coming
