·8 months ago- Untested means broken.
- New open box means used.
- Unsearched means searched.
and now
- Unopened means resealed.
Obviously not always true, but I always buy using those rules and if it turns out to be untrue, then all the better for me.

·8 months agoHola Mr Smedley...! Two things;
1. That is a very nice 85 cc Dollar.
2. Heron purchased an 1879cc during the big Govt auction during 1972. Pd $416.00. Stored coin in 'safe'. Checked it about 1995. A small black mark had grown on the obverse field.
Took coin to big Expo. Had an expert look at the black blob. He said it was organic, in his opinion. Today, after reading post by Mr. Smedley, Heron removed 1879cc from 'safe' to examine it. Surprise! Black blob (about 1.5mm dia.) was GONE. Heron would appreciate knowledge from anyone knowing the 'why' of this situation.

·8 months agoHola Mr Smedley...! Heron had good luck on the big Govt auction. Wound up with about 12 of the CC Dollars (different dates and only ONE 1879cc). The timing was one of those things that might happen once in a lifetime. Heron had received a nice sized commission check in late 1971. Selling electric motors & generators. Rcvd commission check for exceeding sales target set by corporation. So, there were $$$ to invest. Heron sometimes invested in NY Stock exchange or coins. The time was for coins. In 1996, First two coin expos where Heron was a seller, about half of the misc date CCs sold quickly. Heron did not offer to sell the 1879cc. Because of the 'blemish in black' it was still in the 'safe'. (Heron's very first investment in NYStock exchange was a good one. The second purchase of an oil company stock was not a good experience. Heron paid $15 per share for 100 shares and over the next year the stock went DOWN to about $8. When it finally went up Heron sold at $14 per share. Yes, it was a loss but good experience because Heron was extra careful about buying stocks after this no good-nik try...!

OP8 months agomaking a profit is good... CCs only go up in value...
stocks are always risky... i don't buy a lot, but i've had decent luck... i bought $1000 worth when Google IPOed and sold it a couple of years later and did pretty well... had i held onto it i would've done a lot better, but i needed some fundage at the time...
i bought a couple of tech stocks in 2024 that have had ups and downs, but both have basically doubled since then... not gonna make the same mistake i did with google...
here's my 79-CC...

·8 months agoHola Mr. Smedley...! Yes! Stocks are always somewhat risky. About 2 years after starting an acct at stock agent in Southern Cal, Heron would visit agents office (across street from Banco employment). In early morning. There was one elderly stock day trader that took a 'liking' to Heron. Taught Heron about potential winners in stocks. Heron listened with his ears and eyes. This worked well. Plus changing jobs to a 'seasonal' company for profits. Invested in company that employed Heron. Buy in summer when stock went down and buy in Jan or Feb when stock went back up. This worked really well for about 10 years. RE photo your 1879cc. Yes, there is some room for improvement. Never know when luck will be on your side!
Just remembered anecdote re elderly stock day trader. We were watching the ticker tape (seated in arm chairs) and the old Gent said 'Time to Sell'. Came back from cashier with check. He explained that the stock was up 1/8 per share. Heron remarked, not much profit per stock. The elderly day trader says... it is good when the owner of stock has 20,000 shares. Another of life's lessons lernt in one morning at the stock agents 'store'...!

·8 months agoHola Mr. Smedley...! Another goof by an elderly guy. In Heron's post, it should read buy in summer when stock is lower and sell in Jan or Feb when stock is higher.

·8 months agoIs 85 a better date? I see people listing boxes and COA for most years. I just need a COA, but not sure I really want it that badly. The coin has been fine without it for about 45 years now ... I don't even know what date mine is. Bought it as a youngster.

OP8 months agoit is... although any CC Morgan is desirable...

·8 months agoYou can see the cloth weave of the bag it was stored in. I should have gotten a couple of these when the government first offered them. It would have really stretched my finances, but I probably could have gotten two or three.
