·8 months agoRight. I should've said he popularize it, (back when only boys and farmers kept dogs.)
The latest variation, I read, is: 'don't make snow angels in the dog park', (now that everybody and their uncle has a dog.)

·8 months agoQuote - "Snow is white; “yellow snow†is snow that is urinated on. “Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow†was popularized as a song title on Frank Zappa’s album, Apostrophe ( ’ ) (1974), with the lyrics:
“Watch out where the huskies go, and don’t you eat that yellow snow.â€
The jocular saying had been popular before 1974. “Bumper Sticker: ‘Don’t Eat Yellow Snow’†was printed in the Lincoln (NE) Star on July 27, 1970. “Don’t Eat (The/Any) Yellow Snow†patches used by skiers and snowmobilers were popular in 1971. “Don’t eat any yellow snow†might have been cited in print since at least 1968. (The Google Books dates can be incorrect.)"

·8 months agoMoved into a new place this summer. It's at the bottom of a rather deep, steep-sided valley. I may be snowed in until the mountain passes clear in the Spring thaw.

·8 months agoI should survive. Neighbor says the local road department is pretty good at keeping the roads open. The last time we faced a significant storm like this I lived in town, and the mayor declared they wouldn't even bother to hire extra crews to plow the roads. We were on our own.

·8 months agoFrom a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention song, (I looked it up.)
I remember being confused first hearing 'don't eat yellow snow', then thought I figured it out being a skier only to be further confused by the Vietnam war Snoopy patch
I've only just have come to the realization that 'don't eat yellow snow' came about from Zappa's song about Huskies.
Well like I always tell my Smarter Half: it may take me awhile to get it, but when I get it, I get it.

·8 months agoSorry, I am unfamiliar with Robbie Williams, but, I couldn't get enough John Fogerty and Mark Farner music when I was younger.
Occasionally I used to watch Wolfman Jack host all-night B&W B-movies on the weekends. I don't remember the years but it was before pay-for-TV in our area. We only had 7 channels, but if the weather conditions were good we sometimes picked-up Chicago at night.

·8 months agoAhh yes Dr. Demento. Also The Westwood One radio Network and King Biscuit Flour Hour. Koindog mentioned Wolfman Jack. I good weather we could pick him up from Tijuana after he moved his radio show there. My friend was a Ham radio guy and had great antennas.
Our late night TV was Elvira and Captn. Bob on 'till dawn. You could find Captn. Bob drinking at a bar called Daveys Locker every night before his show....................

OP8 months agoWOW we could only listen on the RADIO to that Everything you wrote was on 94 WYSP now A sports station
elheron-grande
·8 months agoHola Roccotaco...! Yes, during the night the ionosphere layer 'moves' further away from earth. This creates a situation where the radio signals 'bounce' further distances. Examples: KFI radio in L.A., a long time ago- 50 to 60 years ago, could be heard in northern Cal at night. Transmitting the Dodger's games. Best example for Heron: The small ship (cutter in USCG) on which Heron was stationed for 17 months, was on Atlantic Ocean Station Delta. Heron was on the 0000 to 0400 'radio watch'. Heard a signal from USCG radio station in Honolulu H. About 0300 hrs Atlantic Ocean time. Heron typed this signal into the 'log'. The Chief Radio-man took the log to District
HQ to confirm 'log' entry. It was indeed confirmed.
Another favorite night-time program was transmitted from a location on Mexican side of border (a 100 Watt transmitter). Studio was in Del Rio, Texas. Heron listened to the Del Rio station for half hour or so that night. Wrote the station manager a letter confirming the Del Rio Texas station signal. The manager wrote a letter to Heron. A letter of thanks for radio distance informacion. Radio was a lot of fun back in those olden days of the 1950s. And one more remembered just now. Heron sometimes at night would listen to a station transmitting from Switzerland. A 'swing' music radio program in English. Yes, radio was indeed a lot of fun in the 1950s.

·8 months agough... worst watch ever if you also had to work regular hours during the day... but it's fun saying the offensive-to-some vernacular...

·8 months agoHola Mr. Smedley...! Yes, the 0000 to 0400 was not always a pleasant time frame.
However, our Chief Radioman was a 27 year man. He made it possible for his radiomen to only work (physical maintenance category) about 2 hrs during day when on the 0000 to 0400. And for el Heron the situation was good because he was RM2 in charge of the emergency radio room. It was about 10 minutes of cleaning and hours of sleeping there in the emergency radio room.

·8 months agoHola to you elheron. This was back in the 60's and we got Wolfman from Tijuana in Las Vegas. No where near the distances you described though. Underground radio was a big deal in the desert SW in those days. Broadcasting as well as receiving. My friend had big retractable antennas that were out of sight when not in use. Quite a setup. I remember we would take turns being lookouts when he was broadcasting something "unsanctioned" looking for those vans with the spinning hoops on top trying to triangulate his position.
There was only one road leading into the area and with binoculars we could see them coming and he would sign off would sign off at the first sight of them. They knew the approximate location but he only broadcasted at night and the antennas weren't visible during the day. He moved and became a preacher and changed his ways. Much fun in those days being "rebels"....LOL.............
elheron-grande
·8 months agoHola Roccotaco...! Yes, antennas have a lot to do with reception. And, having enough KW's to 'reach out'. Usually, back in the 1950s & 60s, the 50,000 Watt stations were few in numbers. In addition, the limit in Mexico was 100,000 Watts.
So, listening to the Wolfman in the early 1960s, late at night, was a fun time also.
When Heron was 13 or 14 years alt, he placed plain copper wires in the back yard of residence in state of Maryland. Seven large poplar trees. Heron had a wire for East and west hook-up. And also for N and S hookup. It was only a minute to change directions for my radio. Table type Philco rcvd as gift in early 1944. The copper wire was not a problem. Heron's father was a Master Electrician and there were barrels of parts plus many coils of wire. Insulated and non-insulated.
Best reception was a radio station in Miami, Fla. One of the first female DJ's. Maybe the very First one... Do not know for sure. Her theme sone was Moon Over Miami. And she sang that. A nice sultry voice. Some other stations rcvd after the sun went down were, New Orleans, St. Louis, Mo (KMO Heron believes. And WWVA West Virginia, for country music.

·8 months agoHola Senor Alt Heron, hola Senor Alt Heron, romeo charlie, I repeat, romeo charlie, over.
We could pick up KGO out of San Francisco after 10PM here in the Pacific Northwest. I would listen attentively to the late night call-in talk shows though I could not always make out exactly what they were talking about, but at least it made me feel smart.
Later in the 1980s, or so, there was a change in the conversations.
I still tried to listen but instead of making me feel smarter I only felt angrier so I stop listening. Politics.

·8 months agoI can remember a couple of times living on high ground allowed me to receive radio. Once in Venezuela in the early 70's (before everything went bad there) I could get a jazz station (in English too) from Guyana at night.
Another time on an extended camping excursion (all summer) in the Ochoco Mountains (Oregon) I had to hike up aways to a ridgeline to get a country station in the evening. DJ "Red Neckerson". Funny guy. Once before a Willie Nelson song he said something to the effect "Next song by Wolly Nelson, please buy his records 'cause he can't even afford a hat. Has to wear a rag around his head". Great summer that one................
