Here's one for the Know What You're Selling category
i bid on and won a small lot of paperweights... the medal in the pics was in a 3 piece glass enclosure, wrapped in a metal band... (more after the pics)
the band (which had to be cut off) is also sterling and weighs 13 grams by itself... it's marked sterling but you'd have to look close... it was possible to see the sterling mark on the medal before removal, but you'd have had to look VERY closely...
the other two paperweights have no intrinsic value, and a low collector value...
the reason it's in the Know What You're Selling category? i got the lot for under $20... 30 seconds of googling showed multiple similar medals and their composition...

·8 months agoHola Mr. Smedley...! That is something really neat. After reading this info, Heron checked the 'Silver' cabinet. Not one of the plates is solid Silver. They are all Silver plated. (Is there a market for Silver plated items?)
*smedley*
OP8 months agothere's some kind of market, but i don't know much about it other than most plated items aren't worth much... old and/or ornate helps...
i have a footed silver plated bowl, maybe 6" in diameter and maybe 3" deep, can't for the life of me remember where i got it, it's nice looking but i'd be surprised if i could get more than $10 for it...

OP8 months agowell, it's nice looking when it's polished... it's actually 6 3/8" wide... marked Gorham / E[anchor]P / YC779, and weighs in at 361 grams...
ebay prices are all over the place... from about $8 to around $50... one aberration sold for $121... that one was hook, line, and sinker...

·8 months agoI usually give all my modern silver plate to a friend who's a scrapper. Fills barrels with bronze, brass and silver plate. You need about 100 pounds of SP before the smelters will take it. He was getting about a dollar per pound before the recent price surge.

OP8 months agointeresting... not that i know how it works, but even at $80/oz it doesn't seem like that could turn much of a profit...

·8 months agoShort answer to your question is: No. I always have a few pieces in the shop, because I like the stuff. Very ornate engraved and modeled compotes and platters, dating to the mid 19th century. Finest Victorian style. I might sell one piece every five years.

·8 months agoHola Agathe...! Thanks for the 'short answer'. (Heron has decided to use one of his silverplated plates when enjoying chicken and tomato soup).
