Hola Mr. Smedley...! Nice coin. The Alt Heron went to the 'safe' and started searching for coins of Hamburg. Found a 5 Mark 1904J. About VF+ (In addition to the 5 Mark Hamburg coin, Heron discovered a 3 Mark Hamburg silver coin. Dated 1914. No pricing info on 2X2s for either coin. Heron is fairly certain they were purchased around 1965 to 1970. The Alt Heron has always liked the coin design. The COA is a good one!
Hola Mr Smedley...! Heron is somewhat sure that the smaller coin stated 'Drei Mark' on the coin. The possibility that it was a different issuing entity is high. The Alt Heron's eyes are fading. Heron will check the 'safe' 31 Jan.
Hola Mr. Smedley...! The Alt Heron searched for information this A.M. (31 Jan '26).
Heron did find a 3 Mark Hamburg coin. It is KM 296. The reference is KM Catalog
of German coins MCMLXXXXIV. (Heron believes this is 1984 or 1994..? Also found this A.M. is a 2 Mark Hamburg coin in A/U grade. KM #294.
And, Heron found a coin that sorda got 'lost' in the collection. It is a 1771 Conventionsthaler of Bavaria. Grades about Fine+. Heron was searching for this coin about 6 months ago. This day it was found in the 2X2 container 'box'. It was flat underneath the 'upright' stored coins. Not a big deal, but it does have .90 oz ASW. It might have more value as bullion than as a collector item?
Hola Mr. Smedley...! Re 1771 Thaler. In the old catalog that Heron owns, it is listed as Conventionsthaler. And, there are 1771 Bavaria silver Thaler coins with mintmark and without mintmark. Heron's 1771 has no mintmark. There are also many 'variations' for these 1771 Thalers. (Heron purchased many German coins from the USN Lt reserve officer. Heron's education about coin grades and coin metals began in 1960 . At the USN Lt's shop. About 1964 or 1965 the dealer was buying back German Silver coins from a widow of a former customer of the coin dealer. Heron asked if dealer would set these Silver coins aside and hold them for Heron. Dealer said YES. Heron paid from $2 to $3 each. Sold some when Heron went full time coin & papermoney dealer in 1994.
Hola Mr. Smedley... Thank you for that pricing info. This 2 Mark Silver Hamburg coin is the best of the Hamburg coins that Heron owns. Really nice. Probably somewhere between XF and Unc. (By the way, in 1988 and 1989 Heron was busy re-packaging coins from 2X2s and flips with poisons, to the latest (at the time) best quality flips. Heron can say that the 'new' flips did a great job of protecting the coins. Heron was surprised at this, but it is a good thing.)
