Coins busted out of paperweight
i've had this for a long time, can't remember if it was broken when it got it, but at one point i glued it back together... obviously it didn't last...
i finally got around to experimenting busting coins out of paperweights... for this one i was successful...
one of the presidential medals had a ton of plastic still on it and isn't worth the time to get it off, it went to the round file...
the Merc in the flip is a 1945-S and has an inverted mintmark, so that's pretty cool... it's a recognized variety by Cherrypicker's and the major slabbers...

OP2 years agoi wasn't sure if the same method would work, but success again... a pair of Hawaii medals, 800 sets minted, unnumbered silver and bronze...
after extraction... forgot to take a before pic...

·2 years agoHola Smedley...! You have some really neat items in your accumulation.
That is a nice looking walking liberty. This is the first time ever learning about breaking out coins from a paperweight...! Always something new to learn in this fine hobby...

OP2 years agoi'd been thinking about busting them out for a long time and figured it was time to try... i did a couple more yesterday and it went fairly well, but all the ones so far have been homemade...
i have a couple of professionally made paperweights to try next... probably after himmacane Milton is done making a mess here...

·2 years agoIs a hammer used? Or a cow-hide mallet? Seems as if the coins and medallions manage to escape scratches...!

OP2 years agoheating to a specific temp, then using various tools to safely remove the coins from the softened acrylic...
this method does give off fumes that could be not good, so i don't really recommend it without precautions...
a safer method would be acetone over a long period of time to dissolve the acrylic...

OP2 years agoi did try putting one in the freezer and then using a hammer per a method someone online used, but it didn't work at all for me...

·2 years agoHola Smedley...! Speaking of the himmicane, the weather station shows path of storm to be fairly close to Tampa area. Batten down the hatches.

OP2 years agooh absolutely... everything's battened or stored... battery packs charged... as ready as ready can get...
it should pass a little south of here, hopefully it won't be any worse than a terrible thunderstorm...
