i don't see anything in Krause about test coins in 18th century France... there are a handful of essais and patterns, and one trial strike listed, but none dated l'an 7...
you didn't mention the mintmark or condition... most likely it's a common coin... mintages are combined with one or two other years, but those combined mintages are in the millions... unless really worn or in really good shape, probably worth in the $10-50 range...
Hola Mr. Smedley...! Thanks for answering. This French l'an7 coin has the single A mint mark. Paris. Grade is 'F' (Fine plus perhaps). This copper coin is dark. Very dark color. This coin was probably in circulation many years. Again, thank you.
yep, common... there is an overdate, 7 over 5, but it doesn't add a premium...
the mintage of l'an 7 A (including the overdate) and l'an 8 A is almost 23M... F is listed at $10 in my 2010 Krause...
l'an dates span years, and l'an 7 is 1798 into 1799...
as one might suspect, the A mint mark is for Paris... the one you want has the mint mark I for Limoges dated l'an 6 or l'an 7... the 2010 Krause notes that both are reported but not confirmed...

However it is also good to know what the coin is and approximate value. Heron is making notes on almost every numismatic item. For the heirs. A time consuming project, for sure.
19 July: Hola Mr. Smedley...! The Alt Heron has been thinking about the huge amount of coins minted during the French Revolution. Heron has never owned a 'rare' coin. Heron has owned some 'scarce' coins but nada rare. One of the favorite scarce coins is the Kreuzer issued by Reichenau (in Switzerland) and dated 1727. Part of the fun of coin collecting.

The Heron found a comment on internet about 'test coins' and Heron is wondering if this coin is a type of 'test coin'. This French coin is from Heron's first batch rcvd. Mid April 1946. It has been hiding in the safe for decades.
