I guess even today its not much different than an expensive watch.
I have saint somewhere that I got as a gift that has a rounded rim from a bezel. Its too bad. I guess when someone owns a coin they can do what they like with it. Its like people who buy antiquarian books and add modern bookplates. I assume trying to immortalize themselves on the back of the original author's fame. It's their book, but they are not going to be the last owner. I think at some level we have a higher obligation to the things we collect.
on my last ship (Military Sealift Command, basically a civilian ship with a military detachment) one of the CIVMARS (civilian mariners) wore a huge gold bar on a huge gold chain, all the time... probably totaled at least 5 ounces... back then gold was under $300/oz...
