1943 copper penny
So I have a 1943 copper penny. I took it to the coin shop and had it tested and it’s real copper. Does not stick to a magnet. Does anyone know more about what I should do to sell?

·2 years agoAbout your 1943 penny WHY DID YOU GO TO A COIN STORE THAT SOUNDS WEIRD BECAUSE DONT YOU HAVE A MAGNIT I, WOULD GET A STRONGER MAGNIT TRY AGAIN THEN WEIGHT IT IF ITS 3 , 1 GRAMS THEN GET EXCITED THEN YOU COULD GET A IDEA OF THE CONDITION WITH PCGS GRADE ON GOOGLE I, MET A PERSON WITH 6 OR 7 ON EBAY WITH THE WEIGHT GOOD PICTURES FOR $5 GEES NO ONE BOUGHT IT BECAUSE OF UNGRADED DO YOUR HOMEWORK 1ST IF YOU TOOK IT TO A COIN STORE WHY DIDEN THE COIN SHOP OFFER YOU SOMETHING LIKE $100 THEY ALWAYS TRY TO SCAM YOU HE SHOULD HAVE EXPERIENCE YOU COULD SEND IT FOR GRADEING COMPANY'S FOR NOTHING THEY DO THAT THEN HAVE $200 PLUS FOR GRADEING COMPANY WEIGHT IT GET A NEW MAGNIT IF ITS REAL YOU HAVE WOW ONLY 6 TO 10 GRADED REAL JOHN , P

·3 years agoThat is a coin you will need certified to be able to sell for any real value. If you send it to PCGS or NGC and it comes back with a straight grade you are golden. I'd contact a major numismatic auction house about it like Stacks, Heritage, Great Collections. Certification first.

·3 years agoIf you find out this coin is authentic, One of the best places to sell it would be either Stacks Bowers Auction or Heritage Auctions and they have their own authenticators. I bought many coins from both of those auction houses and they are extremely reputable and well-known worldwide.

·3 years agoThere is a seller on Etsy who is selling copper-coated 1943 Lincoln cents for $5.00 each -- but he is very openly admitting that they are copper-coated over steel.

·3 years agoA few years ago there was a mint 1943 Copper Cent and Mint 1944 Steel Cent for sale on eBay for a million dollars each. They did not sell.

Are you a coin collector? What made you think it was "special"?
Did the coin shop weigh the coin? Did the person's eyes at the coin shop get as big as watermelons?
Do you know how to do a specific gravity test?
Can you post a photo?

·3 years agoI just want to be the dork here and mention technically it's bronze.
Also if it's real, which would be incredible, ebay is the LAST place to sell something like that. Run that through right channels, it would be worth the fees. Good luck~

The first thing I would do is have it certified by PCGS. Something like that I would take to a major coin show like the Long Beach Expo and have the coin certified on the spot by PCGS. That way you don't have to worry about the coin being lost in the mail.

Just like there are many fake Michael Jordan rookie cards there are many fake rare coins. Mostly from China of all places.

·2 years agoI had discovered a bronze colored 1974 lincoln cent that was found in a bag purchase. I suspected that it was possibly one of the mint trial cents that were mfg to resolve the high cost of copper in the latter part of 1974. The coin was magnetic and showed edge surface tha had worn off and was almost black.The finish & design perfectly match eda standard lincoln cent. I sent it off to PCGS for determining if it was real. The response was that it was plated outside of the mint and therefore it was counterfeit. It was never checked with a magnet which would have proven that it was a steel core and therefore could not have been a plated copper coin. This does not give me a high degree of trusting PCGS to determine a coins material when they are certifying coins.

·3 years agoThe best way to get the most value for it would be to send it in to get authenticated and graded. There are a few major third party grading and authentication company's, ANACS, PCGS, NGC. This coin goes for big$$.
Once the coin is certified you have options to put it into a major auction house, shop it around for the best price at a big coin show or get offers from local coin dealers.
What did the local coin dealer you brought it to say about the coin? Did they also weigh it or look for any tooling around the digits of the date?
A second or 3rd opinion from other coin dealers is well worth the time on this coin.

·3 years agoYou would have to have it authenticated, many fake reproductions have been done over the years. About 40 of these authentic are known to exist. Must be a very sad coin shop as if it's indeed authentic they'd be falling all over themselves and probably offer you 50,000 on the spot.

·3 years agoIf your 1943 penny is made out of copper, it is worth quite a bit of money, generally $10,000 or more! The reason is that the 1943 copper penny is an error coin. The United States Mint accidentally used the wrong planchet metal when striking the coin

Just being "copper" does not make it "genuine".
Beyond that. eBay is likely not the best place to sell such an item. Scammers would have you as their latest conquest.

·3 years ago1943 Copper Pennies are pretty rare. In 1943 copper was needed for the war effort so Steel Pennies started being produced. Be CRAZY sell it online at anyplace, in fine condition talking 150 grand.

·3 years agoSometimes the fast nickel is better than the slow dime.
EBay fees run about 13.5% of your potential buyer's ENTIRE payment, including tax and shipping, plus a 30c service charge.
And as a new or occasional seller, you would likely have to wait up to 30days before Managed Payments will transfer that payment to your checking account.
There is a maximum fee however, which might be helpful. And eBay fees are lower than most B&M auction houses.
You would be well advised to get a Certificate of Authenticity on your coin. That local dealer should be able to guide you on that. Be willing to pay for his expertise as a finder.
