Winning the final bid at the end then finding out I got out bid. How do this happen? | Buying

I should have gotten the item i bid on as It showed the bidding was over and I was the winner but when I went to look it up to pay for it nothing showed. So I went back and found that some how I got out bid. How that's possible when I have a snapshot of me being the winning bidder?? Seems fishy to me.
