Why am I being bid right up to my Max bid when I bid on auctions?
What the h3ll is wrong with ebay... did they change the system on me without me knowing it?
When I bid on an item instead of increasing my bid by $1.00 or whatever over the next highest persons maximum bid, every time I end up paying my absolute maximum bid. Very not cool.
Was this a policy change I never got the memo about, or is this just insane repeated coincidence that every maximum bid I put in is just one increment over the next highest persons maximum bid (which I find hard to believe).

·1 year agoIf YOU are allowed to bid YOUR max bid then why do you think it is UNCOOL if OTHERS do the exact same thing.
I have never understood why people think they are entitled to think they can't be outbid or that someone else thought the item was worth about the same amount as their own max bid.

OP1 year agoHere is the auction: 196647776458
This auction was at around $600 when I got in with seconds left to go.

·1 year agoYes, it's a coincidence that somebody else thought the item as worth about the same amount as you. The bid increment at that level is $10 so his $800 bid used up all but one dollar of our hidden proxy bid.

·1 year agoCongratulations! That's a pretty good deal you got.
Seriously, that's a very desirable piece of hi-fi equipment, and pretty rare. In good working condition, they have sold for $1500 to $2000 in the past 3 years.
You weren't bid right up to your max, although it was close. The second-high bidder sniped it (like you did) about 6 seconds before the end, and they bid a round number ($800). The bid increment at that price level is $10.
It's not unreasonable that another bidder thought this piece was worth about the same amount that you did. They just weren't as skilled at sniping, because it's best to add on a small amount (cents and/or dollars) as a tie breaker. So you won because you bid a bit more than they did.

·1 year agoYeah I can understand your frustration over that. That's just how Ebay works. Ebay allows users to bid more than once. There hasn't been a policy change on that. I can see where Ebay should look into having limits maybe 3 bids each hour or maybe only 1 bid within the last 20 seconds of the auction to prevent this. Just for the record that's not happening cause it cuts into profits. You will have to either live with it or wait until the last seconds to avoid the issue. Just know you are not the only one interested in the item are bidding on.

·1 year ago@cyberbronco,
If you place automatic bids early in an auction, you are inviting nibble bidders to bid up to your max bid price. Some try to expose a max bid, to see if they are willing to bid more or not. If they're not they retract their bid.
If you bid late in auctions you can cut down on that. However, if you are bidding close to the trending price, other bidders may be doing the same thing. It would help if you give us item number of one of the auctions, so we can see the bid history and possibly offer suggestions for not havig that happen.

Many buyers do this which also discourages others from bidding because of the bid activity.
@cyberbronco You may use a sniping bid program/app that can help make bids at the last second. YMMV
